Yaay for DRS' increase. Not great numbers, but considering a lot of ppl were out this past week, definitely an improvement and decent sign.
Yaay for other increases too.

Poor WiW.
I wonder if it will make it through the winter. Or will it be the next JANE EYRE?

PEOPLE GO SEE WOMAN IN WHITE!!!
I think it will make it through the winter, maybe till July. Winter is always hard for the shows, there is still hope right?

Woman in White's gross slipped below $500,000 (almost $200,000 below its break even). Not good.
The Lion King at 68.4%? That may be the lowest attendance figure I've ever seen for that show.
The Producers was only at 59.2%. Interestingly, because their average ticket price is so high, they still grossed $600K and turned a profit.
And Dick Van Dyke gave Chita a 9% boost. Her numbers are still too low though -- she better keep bringing in the guest stars.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 5:14pmAlmostFamous: I went over that with Margo a few days ago: It doesn't matter gow many people see the show. It only matters how much people pay for them. Now, the show would be doing better if in a smaller theatre, but unfortunetely, what's done is done, and they're can't be a transfer as it would cost millions, and the show would lose eveything. I thought it would be a good choice for the Belasco Theatre, but like I said, what's done is done. It needs better advertising as well. They can't keep a show like this in the black. sme of you might say that Light in the Piazza is in the black, and its doing well, but that show got better reviews. This show got a 2.9 on critics reviews on entertainment-link, which is better than what most thought it would get, but still not quite up to par with what it should get. Ah, well. We'll just have to stand back and watch the fireworks go off.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 5:14pmSeeing Lion King at 69% and still having the 3rd highest gross of the week is sad, sad because Disney is really squeezing everyone for that little extra dime. Oh well. Nice to see DRS recover a bit. I imagine it will hover around the 85% mark for the rest of the winter. As for WiW...I better go see it quick.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 5:17pmWell also it's important to remember than the Lion King is playing at the second largest theatre on broadway...so even w/ perhaps the not highest percentage, they still have a lot more paying customers b/c of the large theatre than most shows.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 5:20pmYeah WRQ but look at the avg ticket price. Over $90! That is so high for a musical that brings families. Disney never offers discounts to anyone either (like its needed lol)

How many seats it's selling is irrelevant. The percentage of seats in the Marquis is the only number that matters and right now, they're not selling enough of them to even come close to breaking even.
Another theater for Woman in White is out of the question. In addition to being locked into a lease with the Marquis, even if it was free to go tomorrow, there's no way it would. Moving a show of that size would cost several million dollars (Load-out and load-in alone would be at LEAST $2-3 million). Considering how much they're losing week after week now, there's no way the investors would cough up several million more -- it's not looking like the show would ever recoup as it is. There's also the fact that there aren't any smaller theatres available for it to move to (everything is booked, preventing several new shows from transferring to Broadway).
They've made their bed and have to lie in it. And if word of mouth and marketing doesn't improve attendance very shortly, it may not make it to summer.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 5:42pmColor Purple beat out the Lion King?! That's kinda nice to see. Although not THE greatest show, it (Purple)was enjoyable. And after having the OBCR for a week, I am finding I can't stop listening to it.

To Almost Famous
Doubt they could put WIW in a smaller theater. The Producers seems to be on its last legs @ the same time the movie tanked
Jersey Boys is really bringing it to em. If it gets Best Musical
forget about tickets. Glad we saw it in previews on TDF

Posted: 1/30/06 at 6:28pmIt'll be interesting to see how Lion King does when the new Disney musical opens. I'm surprised Beauty and the Beast beat Lion King in attendence. The Producer is def. falling, but i expect it to get back up. Well, on the bright side, if WiW closes before May, maybe Drowsy Chaperone can move in.

It dosen't look likely that Drowsy Chaperone will find a home before May, they're not even listed on Playbill.com's scedule of upcoming shows.
The Marquis might be a better fit for A Chorus Line or The Wiz.
I'd love to see Drowsy take over either The Brooks Atkinson or The Shoenfeld, which should both be available by this fall, and while I hate to sound like a vulture, but The Cort and The Ambassador are possibilities too. Drowsy will have to compete with Martin Short, Jerry Springer The Opera, and Zanna.
I could picture Jerry Springer in The Circle In The Square, if and when Spelling Bee ever runs it's course.

-- Chicago isn't going anywhere. It most certainly won't close before it's 10th anniversary in November.

Posted: 1/30/06 at 9:26pmMargochanning, you mentioned WIW being locked into a lease at the Marquis. Does that grant any security for the show....do they HAVE to stay for a given period of time? I'm hoping to make it to NYC in early April or May and just want it to last at least until then. Would they give advance notice of it closing or would it just one week be gone? I don't want to miss it! Thanks for any input.

Jerry Springer, even if they cut the cast in half, would be way too large a show to play in a 600 seat theatre like Circle in the Square. Nor do I think you'll see that show arriving on Broadway any time soon.
As far as next season, don't forget Mary Poppins is on its way. I think any of the fall musicals are going to have a hard time competing against the sales that that show will generate.

So maybe a Theatre will open for
THE TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGING
which is getting good buzz and is sold out and extending at the Old Globe?

Posted: 1/30/06 at 11:50pmnot sure how big that show is Curtain, but it might go nicely in the Schoenfeld. Yeah, I guess Drowsy will have to wait and I don't think Barefoot will last that long anyways. I mean I dont think the cast is going to stick around for a year.
