BWW Mad-Libs. Feel free to use them:
Wow, bad week for __________.
Even with ______, the numbers don't seem to be improving for __________.
They shouldn't have opened __________ so early in the season, will that hurt its Tony chances if it closes?
No one expected __________ to sell out that barn.
I'm most surprised by ______________. Those numbers are way better than I had hoped.
Well, of course __________________ has bad numbers, it sucks and everyone knows it.

Posted: 11/24/14 at 3:14pmI imagine that next week will be excellent. 'Wicked' having some weeks with less than 90% is kind of surprising to me.

Is it really feasible for The Book of Mormon to switch? They have spent the last three years in a mid-sized house. They would have to use larger sets, props, etc. AND I don't think the O'Neill is willing to let go of this cash cow.
We've seen shows switch to SMALLER theaters, but BIGGER ones? I don't know if that will work.
It seems like CHICAGO has no chance of beating PHANTOM's record-breaking run. I don't think it has much time left. Speaking of PHANTOM, have they considered downgrading from their barn?
I wager that MAMMA MIA, CHICAGO, and maybe even JERSEY BOYS will leave in the next couple of years.

Unless the Shuberts want a new show in the Majestic, I think Phantom will stay put, not sure where it could go even if it wanted to transfer.
I think Mamma Mia and Chicago will be gone in the next few years, not sure about JB that's still doing fine after 9 years.

No it's not feasible that they switch, although they are both owned by Jujamcyn.
The prediction you make is hardly a prediction. It's a fact that it will happen.

"not sure about JB that's still doing fine after 9 years."
Plus, they'll be celebrating their 10th anniversary next November!

Side Show did open this week, so a bunch of that drop is all of the comps for opening night/review press, one hopes. Although they did have much of the week to build on the good reviews...

Posted: 11/24/14 at 3:55pmLol. People have been predicting Chicago's closing for almost ten years now.

Posted: 11/24/14 at 4:01pmFunny thing about Chicago. When it went to the Ambassador everyone thought it would die. To think how much longer this has run compared to the original with Chita & Gwen is absolutely mind boggling. It is more mind boggling than how Cats lasted beyond opening night

Posted: 11/24/14 at 4:10pmSo most of Monday night's seats for SIDE SHOW were given away. And 2nd tier press was part of the remainder of the week. So as bad as it is, it's still not representative. But it's very unsettling, not good by any means. And as has already been reported, none of the new musicals are catching fire whatsoever. Baffling.

Posted: 11/24/14 at 4:25pmI read somewhere that Book of Mormon got offered the St Jamess, I think after 'On A Clear Night', closed and Mormon were fairly new in the Eugene O'Neil, but the producers knocked it back, as their ticket structure wouldn't work. You can actually make more money in a smaller theatre, than one that is bigger.

"Ticket prices have a definite correlation to reduced attendance."
Most people know you don't have to pay that price. You can see most (all?) of the new musicals this season for under $90 with discount codes.

Posted: 11/24/14 at 4:33pmReduced attendance? The attendance numbers are the same or gain most years. We're not experiencing any reduced attendance. They're just all going to Wicked, Lion King & Book of Mormon.

"I wager that MAMMA MIA, CHICAGO, and maybe even JERSEY BOYS will leave in the next couple of years." I disagree about "Chicago." : )

Posted: 11/24/14 at 6:23pmChicago is probably not closing for another four years considering that the show is pretty low-budget and they already recouped their investments.

Of course Patti disagrees about Chicago.
I am with those who believe it is running out of time. I predict a closing in the next 2 years or so.

Posted: 11/24/14 at 11:25pmI don't know what it's break even is, but if you look at the grosses over the years on an annual basis, it is doing the same business that it did last year and five years ago and ten years ago. I assume that the weekly nut has gone up over time...the question ultimately is how much room they have with an average gross of $500k over the course of the year
