Pretty nice week overall.
Glad to see ITH and Poppins get such large increases!

I don't see how Burn the Floor is going to make it through their extension. Hopefully holiday sales look good.
Glad to see In the Heights got some boost, though it could be doing better.
And Shrek did a lot better this week (though it was probably due to the closing notice).
Overall, it seems as if most shows went through a boost, even though some were not that large. In fact, the more popular shows were the ones that decreased in terms of capacity.

I was so glad last night to see such a packed house.
And the audience was so enthusiastic too!

Posted: 11/9/09 at 3:35pmGlad to see many shows have a nice boost, especially Shrek. I wonder if In the Next Room will make it to the full limited engagement. Also, N2N keeps on getting closer and closer to recouping. Hopefully, it does very soon.

Nice to see "Shrek," "Mary Poppins," and "In the Heights," get boosts. Hopefully, "Shrek" will go out with a bang like "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid (which I cared less about) did.

It's a not-for-profit production, so it will run until its expected closing date. Generally, nonprofits expect to run their shows at a loss, which is why they are subsidized by donations and grants.* Also, they have a huge subscriber base to satisfy, so they can't close it before all their subscribers have had a chance to see it. AND, unlike commercial producers, Lincoln Center can take the huge profits being made from SOUTH PACIFIC and use them to fund their other productions.
*That is a HUGELY simplified statement and I know very well that the business is much more complicated than that.

"Wicked drops yet makes more money then the week prior."
It also has a lot to do with the average ticket price for the week, which depends on which seats were sold and how many premium seats were sold regular price. If you look, the average ticket price this week is higher than last week.
Perhaps less tickets were sold overall, but more people bought more premium tickets than the previous week to account for the higher amount of money the show made.
Pay attention to the fluctuating ticket prices.

Millie, look at the drop off after August 16th. That is the date Maks and Karina left. I think the producers are hoping that having Maks and Kym come back will boost the grosses again. Before Maks and Karina left, the show was playing to packed houses. It also wouldn't hurt things any if Kym and Donny win this season of Dancing with the Stars.

Posted: 11/9/09 at 5:03pmGO FINIANS! They had a huge jump from last week. Lets hope things keep improving for them!
#15re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 11/8
Posted: 11/9/09 at 5:25pmIt is a huge jump, nearly 200 thousand...but given the reviews, would you have expected the number of seats sold to have made a jump as well?
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

#18re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 11/8

Explain WSS....terrible views, no real names and until very recently was in the 90% capacity range.

Oh and Wicked is sold out every week?
It's at 97%, and remains the top grossing show on Broadway. Yes, it's in REAL danger.

This was a BAD week overall, no doubt about it.
Since last week was the Halloween/Marathon/World Series/Time Change quadfecta of suck, you can't even look at the positive comps with last week as any sort of positive this week.
If you ignore the Monster shows and those that are too new to really evaluate, and look at the rest compared to two weeks ago you have have:
After Julie - gross up $30K, Cap down 9%
BTF - down a tad
BBB - down $20K
Chitown - down BIG, $130K and 16%
Hair - down BIG, $130K, and 13%
Hamlet - up a tad
ITH - Down BIG - $100K and 11%
Mary P - UP $45K and 4% - first real increase
N2N - Down BIG (for N2N) - $40K and 7.5%
ROA - Down a tad - $12K and 3%
Shrek - UP HUGE - $225K, and 16% - first sign of life in months.
South pac - Down big, $80K and 7%
SupDo - Down, $25K and 8%
39 - Down BIG, $30K and 4%
Phantom - Down a little, $40K and 8%
Royal Fam - Down, $27K and 2%
West Side - Down BIG, $175K and 11%
Wishful D - flatish, down $4K, up 1%
So of these shows, everyone but closing announcement Shrek, Jude Law's Hamlet, Mary P and Miss Julie were down somewhere from a little to A LOT from two weeks ago. Last week was just so bad, that it made this otherwise crappy week look ok.
