Posted: 12/4/06 at 7:08pmI guess a week after Thanksgiving is time to be on Broadway. Almost all the shows' attendance went down. Even Wicked is below 100%! Spring Awakening really needs more exposures. Will there be any TV appearance? What their PR people doing? Make them earn their salary!

An interesting note about the Coast of Utopia:
The show is unique in that it only had one performance (the opening night performance) during its opening week, which is quite illuminating for those of us trying to get a handle on the whole comp issue. For that one performance (which I assume was a capacity crowd -- was anyone there who can shed some light?), there were 453 paid tickets, which means 594 unpaid tickets for opening night. The play ran for 4 performances in the preceding week, which I assume is when critics saw the show. For that week, the percent attendance actually went up in comparison to the previous week, which is extremely unusual. There were a maximum of 303 unpaid tickets total for those 4 performances, assuming each of the shows was a capacity crowd. The show ran at an average of 93.7% capacity during previews -- if we assume that number held true for the final preview week, we would have had 39 comp tickets for critics (and otherwise). In reality, the show has been picking up steam, so the true number of unpaid tickets during the last week of previews is probably somewhere between 39 and 303.
I did a previous analysis for Three Days of Rain, in which I calculated that there were about 650 comps given out during its opening week, which I thought was a lot, but is in line with what we're seeing here (and actually, the number of comps for Utopia was probably more than that -- 650 comps would mean that 28 critics saw the show, and I'm guessing there were more than 28 critics on their press list).
(I just wanted to add that yes, I like math and I know I'm a numbers geek!)

Posted: 12/4/06 at 7:40pmThe Coast of Utopia was not on TKTS all of last week so I assume almost all of the rest were sold but unpaid.

Posted: 12/4/06 at 7:56pmWell lite2sunshine, the CD is coming out two days after the show opens. They have an appearance booked at the Apple Store in Soho the day after the CD comes out. That ought to help somewhat.
