As a theatre goer who will be a tourist in NY this May, and one who has purchased Comet tickets, Groban had zero to do with my purchasing tickets. I actually couldn't name one of his songs (yikes?) And at the beginning I was torn with a lot of positive reviews but at the same time a lot of negative ones as well for this show. But in reading every review I could find, the more I read, the more I got the feeling that for the most part (ok over generalizing perhaps) but MOST of the negative reviews I saw were from either people who went strictly to see Josh Groban and cared little about the actual play, and maybe tourists who would maybe enjoy a more mainstream type production. This production seems to be appreciated more by people who have seen many types of productions and who can appreciate something a little different rather than step on it because its different. Could be totally wrong, but just my take for what its worth....

Happy to see COMET continue to do so well. I imagine they must have a VERY high weekly running cost.

it would have to be at 80+% in August.
The buying habits of people on here has zero to do with the show's viability.
I expect he's getting around 15% of the gross.
I don't think the show can recoup before he takes off.
You will not find a knowledgeable marketing person who will tell you Groban is not driving the sales.

I think Groban sticking with the show till July will really help build an even stronger word of mouth - enough for the show to sustain through peak summer season after Josh leaves. With good performance come awards season, they've a good chance of staying around for a while. The investment is probably high on the show, so recouping would be difficult to begin with. They probably have to keep some capital separate for theater restorations as it is.

Agreed.
"The is probably one of the cheapest shows to run on Broadway. It's a one-man show, two if you include the alternate. The only competition it has in terms of the lowest running cost is probably Heisenberg."
I'm well aware. They're still doing poorly. Taking in less than 200k is never a good sign.

Who are you angry at now, and why?

Apropos of my comment above re Groban, we now see a sweet discount for his 2 announced absences.

The main criticism is centered around its papar-thin plot, which has neither much complexity nor drama. I guess one can enjoy from the perspective of postdramatic theater, which focuses more on theater itself than what's going on stage. The unity of the audience and performers this show achieves is definitely amazing.
