Most shows do bad this time of year, especially something like Matilda, which is so family based.

Looks as if 3 long running shows have hit consistently low gross potentials. People have mentioned Chicago and Jersey Boys but what about Phantom? Seems as if all 3 are at low numbers. Can they still be making money at the 40% mark?

Around its 25th anniversary, three years ago now, the producers said Phantom's weekly nut is $600,000. I would imagine it has gone up somewhat since then. That means the past few weeks have been losses for Phantom. I just saw it this weekend and they have definitely spent quite a bit of money updating some of the props and costumes. I see the show often enough to notice when something is new. Not necessarily different, but new. And Saturday night's show was completely full, so I guess the other nights of the week had especially low attendance.

In all honesty, wouldn't Phantom have TONS of money sitting in reserve, that they are likely fine to wait out the slow, non profit making months, waiting for the months where they just add to the total sum they have made? It's not like the show is in bad straights financially... I'm sure they have TONS of money saved up... right?

I suppose that with all the money these shows have made, they can weather a few bad weeks. Just seems as if they haven't been this low in a long time. Could be that most theater goers have seen these shows and are moving on to newer classics?

Phantoms gross was actually even lower same time last year, so they actually went up this year :)

Chicago is dirt cheap to run, and Phantom has tons of reserve money. Jersey Boys may be nearing its time, though.

Matilda has been averaging a $900k gross the last 52 weeks through all its ups and downs so it is covering its costs which should be in the $800k vicinity with all the kid maintenance. With the challenging deal they gave their investors I doubt backers are seeing much of a return lately. Jersey Boys has been averaging around $650k in weekly grosses so they are probably just hanging on.
