"If you took a poll between a random group of people, I'm sure the only show most of them have heard of/seen is Wicked."
WRONG! I was actually talking to people when I was ushering the other day if they were aware of our Broadway season in Richmond next year... when I told them it was Avenue Q, Wedding Singer, and Wicked, they only knew Wedding Singer because of the movie... A lot of people don't know about Wicked

It's not the ONLY show most people have heard of but it's definitely up there.
It's pretty hard to dispute WICKED's popularity with how successful it's been not only in the U.S. but around the world. But then again, blaxx wasn't really so much making a point as just being a bitch to me for no reason for the 10,238th time in the last month.

Yeah, love, that's very different from saying it's on its way to be THE most popular Broadway show ever.
10, 239.

I wasn't comparing it to Wicked.
I was saying Wicked didn't get raves, it got mixed reviews but word of mouth made it a hit...
I'm saying the same type of thing could happen with 9 to 5 but I doubt it will be as big of a hit... but you never know.

Posted: 4/20/09 at 6:08pmI'm surprised to see the Norman Conquests so low. When I was there (Tues-Thurs), it seemed pretty well-packed. Not sold-out but I'd say 85% full. Maybe no one is going to the marathon shows, or the other random week day shows?

I love it how when 9-5 has low low tix prices and low gross its ok beacuse they r just getting word of mouth and it will be fine.
but when rock of ages had low grosses and tix prices it was DOA. lol. I love this board.
anyone notice the upward trend since the first week of previews of roa grosses and tix prices..just like I said. steady incline. mmmm..feels good to be right again.
oh and that OCC nom isn't too shabby either. here comes the tony nom next

When I was there this Saturday on a Marathon day it was pretty well packed at the 11:30 show and the 3:30 show.

I know selling drama is hard but Elms numbers are absolutely putrid.
I wonder if they will play the full scheduled run if they do not improve drastically. Hopefully, it will get enough good reviews to goose up the box office .

A few thoughts:
-9 to 5 seems to be destined to become this board's next "Legally Blonde," both in terms of many posters' love/hate relationship with it and also the back and forth over if it is successful or not. And even if it is the next "LB," is there anything wrong with that? LB had a healthy if not record breaking run that didn't recoup but will ultimately be a financial success thanks to the tour and regional productions. It was met with mostly warm if not overwhelmingly kind reviews and was nominated for a bunch of Tony awards. I can think of worse shows to be compared to.
-Avenue Q seems to be trucking along just fine, which is great, but my heart hurts to see those numbers for August. Are they trying to hold out until casting and creative teams are announced for the Weinstein film so more interest is drummed up?
-Great to see Billy Elliot is still doing so well. I love the show and it deserves all the crowds that can fit in the door. Ditto for Hair.
-I think it was a given that Desire Under the Elms would struggle, but this is bad. However, perhaps it doesn't factor in that the balcony is not sold, in which case the numbers are simply bad, not disasterous.
-Ouch for Joe Turner and Mary Stuart. I want to see them when I get to NYC in two months...now I am worried about whether or not they will still be playing.
-Did WSS just break its own record at The Palace?
-I'm curious to see how the Disney shows will hold up in the next few weeks as they become acclimated to their odd scheduling. Will it work?

Re: desire under the elms.
from what i hear, its been heavily papered.
but i am curious: when the producers of Desire close the balcony and dont sell tickets for that section- is that in any way reducing costs for them? i mean, maybe less ushers but how do the producers really save money by limiting that?

my prediction is that it will close right after labor day.
:)
i was right about legally blonde,
I am REALLY right about ROA (next mamma mia billion dollar musical) and I think i will be right about Hair.
The reviews helped it for a few weeks I would say it will slow down in late aug. Sept will be bad and oct and I think either it will close right after labor day or Jan of next year.
I don't think there is a market for it.
:)

HAIR now has 5 MILLION dollars in advance sales. I don't think its going anywhere anytime soon. 10% back to their investors already...and only open less than a month.

It's obvious you are trying to say Rock of Ages is better than Hair...but without admitting it. Hair isn't going anywhere. And if you are comparing ROA and HAIR, then you have a serious issue. Hair is full of beauty, hope, tragedy, dissapointment, and serves as a history lesson. Rock of Ages is an annoying garbage rock show.

It's been a while since we got a show with delusional fans, I just LOVE it!

Posted: 4/22/09 at 5:39pmIt hasn't even made half a million yet. It is not the next Mammia Mia, get over it.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/19#48
Posted: 4/22/09 at 5:42pmYeah, ROA is more like the next trillion dollar musical!

"Elms" was so empty last night, it was frightening !!!
Could not have been 50% full.
