Wow, good for EXIT THE KING! Even with the big names, I never thought I'd see this strange, fairly inaccessible Ionesco work pack 'em in.
That's just an awful, awful number for DESIRE UNDER THE ELMS. And AUGUST. Yeesh.
The NORMAN number is depressing too.
Will be interesting to see what happens with ROCK OF AGES. It's not quite there yet, but it looks like it's going to make a run of it.

Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:30pm9 to 5 has discounted massively during previews thats why. Will boost once it opens.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/19#6
Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:31pmThe reviews will have to be absolute raves for them to stop discounting.

There is no way 9 to 5 is going to get absolute raves.
Norman Conquests was also discounting and comping heavily last week.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/19#8
Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:36pmAnother great-looking week. Can't wait for Norman to get its reviews and start packing in the crowds.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/19#9
Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:37pmI'm surprised by The Norman Conquests numbers. When I was there the theater was full, maybe 10 empty seats...

I really don't think 9 TO 5's reviews will have to be raves for it to do well.
Word of mouth is VERY strong already.

Word of mouth will not force the producers to pull their discount offers, like Mark_E was insinuating. The reviews will have to be massive raves to warrant the removal of discount offers. Without the big raves, the discount offers will still remain, and the show's gross/average ticket price may be problematic still.

Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:45pmOh, well, not sure if the discounts will be removed, but I think it'll be a hit regardless. It just may take longer.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/19#13
Posted: 4/20/09 at 3:54pmI'm not hearing good word of mouth at all on 9 to 5, at least from people whose opinions I value. Sure the tourists are loving it, but that's to be expected. And they will clamor for tickets regardless of reviews because its familiar and its totally mindless entertainment. But I'm hearing pretty negative word of mouth, from "cute but not worth the money" to "absolutely dreadful." I went with a group of at least 25 regular theatre-goers, and the concensus was a big thumb's down.

Posted: 4/20/09 at 4:17pmkudos for Hair for setting a new box office record at the Al Hirshfeld(Curtains held the record previously)!!! Keep it up!! Nice numbers for the majority of the shows!

Each week, 9 to 5 sells out but at "low prices," presumably because it offered steep discounts to spur word of mouth (which seems to be happening). And every week, someone comments that the show looks like it's about to die because its gross isn't that high. Is it really that much of a stretch to believe the show is going to do quite well? Just seems like a no-brainer to me.
Meanwhile, I'm so disappointed that reasons to be pretty isn't catching on. And I'm baffled that Impressionism hasn't posted a closing notice yet. Also, while I understand that Irena's Vow is holding out for the Tony's, it just makes me feel bad watching a show atrophy money.
Last but not least, I sincerely hope that the great reviews will do wonderful things for Joe Turner (which I adored) and Mary Stuart (even though I haven't seen it yet)

Question: Does that percentage for Desire take in to account the fact that they are not selling balcony seats? I don't know the normal total number available for the St. James.
Glad to see Shrek holding strong lately. That was a scary couple of weeks back there!

You're absolutely deluding yourself if you think 9 to 5 is going to become the new Wicked.

9 TO 5 will be a hit, IMO but nowhere near the scale of WICKED.
WICKED is on its way to becoming, whether you like it or not, one of the (if not THE) most popular Broadway shows ever.
It's a once in a lifetime kind of phenomenon of a show.

"Yes THE most popular Broadway show EVER! Like totally."
It actually kind of is.
If you took a poll between a random group of people, I'm sure the only show most of them have heard of/seen is Wicked.
