So when will Tarzan start taking a hit because of how bad it is? I mean, families will still flock to it and constantly see it for the first time, but the only consequence from the show being horrible is that it won't get the return visitors that other shows do. It'll still be thriving because of first-timers who don't know, and won't get those repeat ticket sales from those who have seen it before.

I answered my own question.

Hoorah for Wedding Singer, Drowsy Chaperone, and even DRS this week. :)

A good week overall, but why is Sweeney doing so bad?

Sweeney is never going to play to packed houses, or even 90%. Let's all get that straight. It would be great if it did. At least it's making some money.

Damn Sweeney. At least it went up! If they're not selling tickets all that well, why not drop the price for premium seats???

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

they don't drop premium tickets because people who buy premium tickets sometimes do such without ever checking to see if there are regular seating available. the Times had an article not too long ago about this stating that even when Well was at it's worst it still would see premium tickets.

if they can make the money, they're gonna charge premium pricing.

I think TARZAN is already taking a hit. It's numbers are not what you would expect from a "blockbuster" brand new Disney musical. LION KING or BEAUTY AND THE BEAST played to over 100 percent capacity for months after they opened.

Still, Variety wrote that Tarzan broke a house record at the Rodgers this week.

Well as long as ticket prices and premium seating keep rising, shows are going to break "house records" left and right over the next year...

I think last week's TARZAN gross at only 90 percent is shocking and telling. I think THE LION KING literally played years at over 100 percent capacity.

Lion King often still plays to 100% capacity.

Yayy WEDDING SINGER! It's got to keep rising though.

I'm very concerned for Sweeney. I don't understand why its numbers are so low. I mean, it's like everyone has seen it multiple times, and it is such a brilliant revival, WHY SO LOW?!

C'mon, NY audiences. Go see this show.

SWEENEY TODD has always been/always will be a tough sell. They are in a fairly big musical house and the show has gotten very mixed word of mouth from the general public. Its just not a show tourists have a lot of interest in seeing. That they have already made back their investment is fantastic. At this point any additional week the show runs is icing on the cake.

Plus, Sweeney is fairly cheap to run.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

Yeah, when I was walking to see the "The Wedding Singer" I heard this lady say that she saw Sweeney and thought it was "okay, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's sort of out-there." So I guess the word of mouth isn't so great. I'm suprised Drowsy is only in the 80%s but making $900,000, that's pretty damn good for a show that is rather small and short.

See a lot of people just don't get darker shows.

I have a friend who is just starting to like Broadway and I wouldn't stop going on about SWEENEY. So she asked to borrow the CD and she said "Yeah, I just don't get it. What's going? Why is he angry? Why does his daughter not ask questions about where she is?" and stuff like that. Same thing with ASSASSINS.

Sweeney is at the 1,100 seat Eugene O'Neill - small, by musical house standards.

I was gonna say, Smaxie, it didn't seem to big when I was there.

Paris, I don't think a lot of people "don't get it" but it's also not what some people want. If they're going to put money down on a show they want to see sets, big orchestrations, etc. My acting teacher here at school hated this production of Sweeney, which I'm suprised by. It's just a hard show to sell. It's a dark show, and right now it's summer, so it's just not going to sell during the summer.

Yeah, that's probably true.

But I was just basing what I said on the fact that when I went to go see it a couple weeks ago, during intermission I heard a couple say:

"What? Priest? Are they eating people?"
"No, I think it's a metaphor."
"Oh."
"I haven't understood one word that bald guy has said for now."

Well its certainly big compared to the tiny Watermill and Trafalgar Studios the production was designed for. I think it is arguable that the production would have sold better in a smaller theatre; given that the orchestra is on the stage and is only the cast, it didn't really need to play a musical house at all.

HAH, Paris, I heard a few people saying almost the same thing, def a tough sell show!

Tina Maddigan, who plays Sophie in the biggest role of her young career, remembers "bouncing on the sofa as a child at home in Newfoundland, listening to ABBA records." GO TINA!!

Oh, Sweeney...

Congrats to just about everyone else!

I'll be interested to see how the next few weeks trend for DRS.
