No, and with Elf arriving this year, it's doubtful that White Christmas will return.

Posted: 7/6/10 at 3:17pmYikes. Come Fly Away is not looking good at all. I bet they will close after the summer. American Idiot and Million Dollar Quartet don't look too great either. Great week for Memphis and La Cage though!

Several of the longer running shows are down quite a bit in average ticket price and/or attendance so far this year (compared to last year) . . .
CHICAGO
2009 - $76.57 / 83.39%
2010 - $78.34 / 74.71%
MAMMA MIA!
2009 - $82.85 / 92.40%
2010 - $79.60 / 83.94%
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
2009 - $73.29 / 86.14%
2010 - $77.57 / 80.50%
On the other hand, it seems Disney was smart to close The Little Mermaid and keep Mary Poppins open - it's been doing better business so far in 2010 than in 2009 or 2008:
2008 - $69.70 / 81.71%
2009 - $69.14 / 78.31%
2010 - $73.18 / 81.00%

Posted: 7/6/10 at 4:19pmGood for Next Fall closing strong. And in regard to Come Fly Away, am I the only one who feels like there was no build/publicity? I follow BWW pretty regularly and never heard of it. Incidentally, the only way I heard about the show was from Jackie Hoffman's blog lol

Posted: 7/6/10 at 4:29pmI don't think the theatre is American Idiot's problem. It's problem is it's target audience isn't going to cough up the money for a Green Day concert not performed by Green Day.

Posted: 7/6/10 at 4:32pmYou really don't think it would be doing better in a smaller theater?

I think the audience numbers would be the same. Sure if fifty people are going to see a show, it is better to have then in a 60 seat theatre more so then a 600 seat theatre, it's not going to make the attendance any better.
I think American Idiot, although I myself did not like it much, is well crafted and a noble idea. However as I said before, it's target audience is not going to pluck down that kind of cash, even if they were a little bit interested in musical theatre at all, for a Green Day "Musical" that didn't have Green Day performing.
I think it might do better touring in small houses in very limited runs per venue.
It does have a large cast and I am sure it's weekly nut sort of dictated what theatre they decided to move it into to hopefully recoup and become profitable.

Posted: 7/8/10 at 9:56amMaybe people were too hot to go to the box offices or stand in the TKTS line. I don't suppose it will help very much if MDQ, CFA and AI end up on TDF, although it would get me to check out MDQ and CFA. I'm interested, but not interested enough to drop ~$80.00 to see them. I loved American Idiot, so hope to check that out again this summer. It seems like Next to Normal benefits from being perpetually on TDF, where as the shows in the bigger houses almost "jump the shark" when they turn up there. The exception to this seems to be Phantom.

Gator, I wonder why the producers do not offer tickets on TDF, may not boost up their overall in take by much, but a filled seat is better then an empty seat and there is probably some kind of tax write off incentive in making seats available to TDF.
MDQ and AI do have lotteries, if you lose at MDQ they offer rush seats for $40, not sure if AI does the same.

#21Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 7/4
Posted: 7/8/10 at 11:41amNot always, singtopher - especially if the 4th falls on a Saturday or Sunday as it did this year and last. This year grosses were down 8.42% and attendance down 1.75% from the previous week. Last year grosses and attendance were down 7.96% and 1.60%. If it falls on a weekday, generally grosses go down a bit but attendance stays steady.

Frogs- Most shows sell out on the 4th.
July 4th is usually a terrible day, particularly for shows that have evening performances. Matinees will sell all right (because people still have time to see fireworks after), but evening shows are usually empty and heavily comped.

Posted: 7/8/10 at 11:56amIs everyone who enters the lottery at MDQ still winning or has business picked up there since the Tonys? When I went a week prior to the Tonys, about half of the lottery seats were empty.

matty, I did the lottery on Saturday and I would say there were about 30 or so people there. The losers were offered rush seats, did not ask where those seats were located, they cost $40 and looking up at the mezz it was only about 1/3 full, so even if they were rear row seats you could have easily moved up.
I would also say that lottery was the weirdest, the girl doing the lottery did not just pull names and call them. She stood at the table, pulled the cards, piled them up and kept going back to them. Not sure if she was reading the names or the number of tickets the person wrote down. She played with the pile a few times, placed them down and then pulled the rest of the cards out, I thought maybe she was looking for a card that was looking for a single ticket, No questions asked. She then took the cards and started calling the names. Now there was a group of maybe 8 to 10 people, half of them young adults, probably teenagers and one child about 4 years old. The first name called was a girl from that group. The second name called , the child from that group, asked if she had ID, she said no. The girl doing the lottery went and asked the box office person if it was ok, she came back and said it was. Third name called, another person from that group, an adult female, she too had no ID. She plead with the lottery girl, telling her I can give you my zip code, blah, blah blah, she then had her husband show a credit card with the same last name (not first name of the women). Then another person was called from that group, same bull crap, no ID. That whole group got the center front row. They were either very lucky or something fishy went on. Several people in the grouped were getting annoyed, not only about the kid winning but the no ID being allowed to purchase the tickets. Comments like next time I will put down a few names and claim no ID were made. Anyway, there were 3 of us and only one of us won (one two of us planned on going so we never did the rush) I asked the lottery girl how busy it has been and she said it varies, so give it a try. They are front row but keep in mind the sides are a bit partial view, at least on one side, the Piano blocks part of the stage.
