yeah [TOS], its a shame... I think that part of the problem is that people come to NY, and can only go to one show, thus they see something else with more hype/reputation/ a movie version.

I haven't seen [tos] and I do trust many friends from here, who told me it's wonderful ! I'm sure that had I the chance to see it I'd probably love it...
BUT
Are you guys honestly surprised it's not doing well ???? We ALL know that the majority of Broadway shows survive from tourists ! Tourists that pay full price or at best go to tkts and many of them don't even know perfect English ! There's no chance they would go see a show with a bare stage and 4 actors, no matter how incredible it may be ! NONE !
Broadway has become an attraction ! Visitors want to go back home and tell their friends about the great Bway spectacle or the famous actors they saw, along with the ESB, Lady Liberty, Central Park or the Met ! They want to see something that they can't see back home ! I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but it's a fact of life, period !

Posted: 8/11/08 at 8:06pmNo one expected GYPSY to be selling out. It's actually doing pretty respectable business for that barn of the St. James. I wouldn't worry unless attendance slips below 70%.

Posted: 8/11/08 at 8:20pmBroadway has always been a tourist attraction and will always be. When will people stop bemoaning that fact as if that was a bad thing? It's a good thing!

Posted: 8/11/08 at 11:03pmThe whisper over at the Eugene O'Neill is that SA will likely close at the end of the year. And the way they have been casting lately, it wouldn't surprise me. Sad.

Wow, glad that Whoopi is really helping XANADU. Producers must be getting lots of money to save to last through the crude fall.
I am insanely happy that a so-called "niche" show with no names like IN THE HEIGHTS can be doing sell-out business. So so so happy about that.
I feel pretty sad about [title of show] but we'll see what happens.
GYPSY is doing excellent business, I think, it's obviously not going to sell out, but it's still pulling in over $700'000 which for a show without a Disney-like budget must be pretty neat.
Overall, a great week. Glad to see AUGUST keeping steady, I really hope it stays open through next year so I can see it at least once more on Broadway...hopefully with the wonderful Amy Morton.

I can't wait for [tos] to post its closing notice. Maybe then the obnoxious ad featuring Hunter Bell will finally be removed from this site.
Your maturity is astounding.
I really really hope [tos]'s grosses pick up. I was never expecting a sell out hit, but I do wish the show well.
On the other hand, I'm glad to see the numbers for Xanadu and ITH. Glad to see A Chorus Line going out strong.

>I really really hope [tos]'s grosses pick up.<
Being realistic, we're two and a half weeks away from Labor Day, when grosses fall across the board. If it's not selling now, in the wake of the reviews, vacations, summer tourism etc., it's only going to get worse after September 1.

"Why are you getting worried? 72.8% isn't that bad..."
Even though Spring Awakening isn't doing bad, the total gross the show made that week is slightly more important than the capacity.

Posted: 8/12/08 at 10:33amI just have to say I'm surprised how Spring Awakening is one of the lowest-selling shows percentage-wise now. It's summer, a time shows that have a younger audience should be doing great, and considering how it did when it first opened -- I feel like they're not doing the greatest advertising/marketing/publicity campaign. Regardless of how you feel about the show, I think it should be doing better than it is.

I agree. it seems like the producers aren't spending anything to advertise Spring Awakening. maybe that will change with Hunter Parrish now in the cast.

Whoooooooo POTO!!!
And I think besides the issues already said about [tos]'s audience, also many people don't get the title (sounds stupid but plenty of non-theatre fans who think it sounds stupid) for some reason!?
