"Ouch", exactly. At a gross under $300,000 for a musical and 42% capacity, you can expect to see a closing notice up soon.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 5:11pmJackie Mason could only muster up 39% in his final week? He should retire.

WHOA! Go Sweet Charity.
Very few shows jumped like that. If it get back in the 70's, it's in good shape.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 5:17pmGo? How low was it before, cause it wasn't looking that pretty this week...I'm upset for Hairspray. I don't think they've been this low in a while. And it's not even all that low. I just like to keep it in the 90's.

seems as thou the Broadhurst has had quite a financial jinx the past few decades. Other than Fosse, any shows even make it to a year there anymore?
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/4/2005#11
Posted: 9/7/05 at 6:16pm700 Sundays and Dance of Death were both commercial successes at the Broadhurst.

Posted: 9/7/05 at 6:17pmWell, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN ran there for two years and two months at 904 performances. It also closed at a loss, at the time the longest running musical to close at a loss (WILL ROGERS FOLLIE returned its investment after its tour, I believe).

I don't question that some of these grosses are alarming----but could the mostly downward spiral for the week also be attributed to sluggish box office because of Labor Day weekend when most people head out of town?
Do you predict any trends now that summer is essentially over?

sorry i should have clarified --- the Broadhurst is jinxed musically. No doubt 700 Sundays was a huge success, but let's look at some of the theatre's other recent 'gems' ----
Urban Cowboy
Never Gonna Dance
Into The Woods revival (yeah it won the Tony, but lost BIG bucks)
now Lennon
That house is jinxed.......jinxed I tell you!!!!!!

re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/4/2005#20
Posted: 9/8/05 at 12:04amMy guess is that it's still selling out the weekend performanes. Attendance has probably dropped during the week, now that summer is over.
re: Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 9/4/2005#21
Posted: 9/8/05 at 2:00amThis week begins the first major slump of the season, with summer vacation being over and people going back to work and school. It'll pick up again in a month or two with the holidays, then slump again through March before picking up again for summer. There'll be some exceptions to the rule, of course, but most shows will see a dip in grosses. It sucks :-P
