I think its obvious who is going to win the Pulitzer and Tony Award ? Hamilton
But does that mean shows will be holding back?
And do people think it will be a good or terrible season?
what shows do people think that have most hype? besides Hamilton

For new musicals, there's Amazing Grace, Allegiance, On Your Feet, School of Rock, American Psycho, Bright Star, Tuck Everlasting, Shuffle Along and probably Waitress, as well as revivals of Fiddler on the Roof, Dames at Sea, She Loves Me, The Color Purple and Falsettos. So, no, Broadway is not holding back because of Hamilton.
The most interesting thing to me about the 2015-2016 line up is how ethnically and culturally diverse it is, compared to the season that just ended.

Broadway is pretty ethnically diverse these days, actually. Aladdin, The Book Of Mormon, The King And I, The Lion King, Amazing Grace, and the upcoming Hamilton, Allegiance, On Your Feet, and the revival of The Color Purple have mostly or entirely non-white casts!

My point wasn't that Broadway is not ethnically diverse. It was that the 2014-2015 season wasn't especially so. The current line-up for the 2015-2016 season already is a stark contrast to the season that just ended.

It will be an interesting race for Best Revival of a Musical for sure

Yes - as of now, there are five potential Best Revival of a Musical nominees for three spots.

I'm not being snarky. But is Dames At Sea considered a revival? And Shuffle Along is a revival and not a new show![]()

How is it determined how many spots there are for nominees? Looking back at past lists, I noticed for best revival there are usually 3 but some years there were 2 and one year (2010) there were 4. For best new musical it looks like usually but not always 4 shows.
I'm sure Hamilton will be recognized, but I also hope Leslie Odom Jr. receives a nomination as his performance was my favorite. (Of course who knows what other great performances there will be, but I just adored him.) All cast was billed in alphabetical order at the public so I'll be interested to see who (aside from Miranda) will be eligible for best lead vs. best featured.
Aside from Hamilton, I'm most excited for Shuffle Along (I've never seen Audra) and School of Rock. I'm intrigued by American Psycho but I have no idea how the subject matter can be turned into a musical. I'm also excited for Dear Evan Hansen but I'm not sure whether that will be this season?
I'm seeing On Your Feet today.
No way to know for sure at this point but to me it looks like it's going to be a good season. It also appears it will be an excellent season for plays. I'm very excited for Misery.

I've actually been wondering about Shuffle Along. It's a musical about the making of the original musical. My understanding (which could certainly be wrong so feel free to correct me) is it's the same score but a different book. So will that be classified as a revival?

Posted: 6/28/15 at 11:10amChiTheater you may be correct. So should it still be called Shuffle Along?

Dames at Sea is a revival. The show has been around almost 50 years.
And it seems like a determination of Shuffle Along won't be possible until we know more about it.

It's not actually just called Shuffle Along. It has a subtitle that is like 97 words long and I can never remember. :)

Shuffle Along's full title is Shuffle Along, or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed. It's an original musical about the creation of Shuffle Along, using the score of Shuffle Along. So, just from precedent sake with the various 'new' Gershwin shows over the years, all elements should be eligible, except for the score.

Found it.
Shuffle Along, Or, The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed.
It's no wonder I don't have it memorized. :)

Regarding the number of nominees questions:
Per the ruling that went into effect two seasons ago, the number of Tony nominees in the four production categories is dependent on the number of eligible shows. The standard number is 4. If there are nine or more eligible productions in a season, there is a possibility of expanding the category to 5, if the fifth place production comes within three votes of a tie for fourth.
If there are five or fewer eligible productions, the set number of nominations is 3. There is again the possibility to expand the category to a fourth nominee, with the same tie rule as above.
Right now there are five musical revivals. If that stands there will be three slots with a potential fourth in the case of a tie. If the revival of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas comes to fruition for the spring (which seems likely), there will be six contenders and a guaranteed four slots.

Is Tuck Everlasting going to be yet another Nicholaw hit? The man just seems unstoppable at this point.
All of his major shows have won Tonys in the featured acting category, so will this show continue the trend? Perhaps Andrew Keenan-Bolger is looking at his first Tony if he transfers with the show to Broadway? Carolee Carmello also got great reviews, but she left the show to be a part of Finding Neverland. Maybe she will jump that ship (no pun intended) to get on board with this one?

Unless I am completely mistaken, wasn't he part of the Tuck Everlasting Tryout? Not sure if he is staying with the project however (one can only hope!)

Casey Nicholaw always uses the same formula for this shows. Theres always a lot of production value, and he does musical comedy. He really gives the people what they want. I am looking forward to seeing how he will do next season with Tuck Everlasting in a season that has Hamilton, School of Rock, Waitress, American Psycho, Amazing Grace, On Your Feet, Allegiance, and Shuffle Along. Its definitely gonna be exciting. I have a feeling Diane Paulus is gonna beat him out next season, just like he beat her out this season.

Am I the only one who saw that pic from Tuck and wondered if that Yellow Mann doing whatever he's doing might not have spiced up the Visit?

Not at all! (And I loved The Visit!)
Unless there has been a major change that is staying hidden, Terrence Mann will come to Broadway with Tuck. He, as well as Carolee Carmello and Andrew Keenan-Bolger, have been with the show for at least 5 1/2 years. I think they're excited about the chance to bring it to a bigger audience.

Carolee didn't "leave" the show. She did all of the previews and 2 official performances in Atlanta and had to be replaced temporarily. She has every intention of doing the show this spring, when her Finding Neverland contract (assuming it's a standard 1 year) is up in March.
