Mark Subias was a prominent, ruthless agent for clients ranging from authors & directors (Ivo Van Hove, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, David Cromer, Lila Neugebauer) to actors (Cynthia Erivo, Bryan Cranston, Kevin Kline, Steven Pasquale). You'll remember his altercation with Scott Rudin, as told in the NYT.

He has left his longtime agency, UTA, to become Managing Partner of Smuggler Management. "He’ll be tasked with guiding the careers of a select roster of artists (to be announced) and working closely with his former colleagues and the industry at large... Subias also will be developing and producing projects across theater, TV and film for the company." Smuggler was founded in 2002 by producers Patrick Milling-Smith and Brian Carmody.

This is a natural step for someone who has spent much of his career packaging projects and unofficially "armchair producing" shows, so will be interesting to see how his role here plays out if he indeed gets into the Bway producing arena.

Character or not, he stood up to someone no one else would, so I already like him.

Did he really stand up to Rudin? (I don't know the answer there.) It seemed more like Rudin got p.o.'d, and decided that he wouldn't do business with ANY of Mark's clients unless they dropped him as an agent, after a communication issue re: travel for Ivo and WEST SIDE.

And yet, given who this industry selects for prominence and how many chances they get, he's probably gonna coast for a while and maybe even become a power broker. Nature of the beast...
