Will lost broadway actors to television ever return to Broadway ? like Sutton Foster, Megan Hilty, Sara etc. or is Broadway becoming less attractive to stars ???
I would hate to see Laura Osnes and Patina Miller's talent leave Broadway but would understand that it would help the career of both actresses.
I thought it was about Sarah Bernhardt. But she died. We did lose her though, so technically the OP would have a point if he was talking about her. But since he wasn't, there's no point at all. Vanilla Ice is lost, though.
Sutton Foster would be no great "loss," overrated and really grating, though not quite as bad as her brother. That said, she's been off for one year and is in a TV show that isn't exactly ratings gold. She'll probably be back.

I'm sure most will come back at some point -- but it depends on what other jobs come their way. I think David Hyde Pierce is a great example: $ he no longer needs (assuming he was even remotely smart with his earnings from Frasier) so he can afford to do b'way with not concerns
TV and film is certainly less demanding and more financially rewarding.

Yes and when you are young it gives you more exposure as well. And look all or most have done a lot of disciplines of shows television , movies etc....
Any working actor will tell you, making a good living is as important to them as it is to a regular person therefore any opportunity that surfaces where they can make more money they will gladly seek, regardless what the project is. To any actor, steady television work is like winning the lottery. This is why literally EVERY Broadway (or New York based actor) heads out west during pilot season. All in hopes of landing a series that succeeds. On television you can earn in a few episodes what would take you a couple of years of non-stop Broadway work. Only an idiot would not see the logistics of this.
Jane Krakowski, and more recently Martha Plimpton, both have said that the steady television work has allowed them the luxuries they NEVER could have afforded by working in the New York theater (both on Broadway and Off). They are proud owners of their homes in New York. Something they NEVER could have afforded solely working on Broadway.
There is also the reality that you would need to be in a play for 10 years to be seen by the same amount of people watching you on a single TV show episode. Barbra Streisand and Bebe Neuwirth both have mentioned this statistic.
Stage actors LOVE working in theater more than anything else in the world but life's realities come first. Whenever possible, many return to their stage roots (Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Alec Baldwin, Stockard Channing, Cynthia Nixon, etc) but now the paycheck isn't as important. They now can afford to do a play for the joy of it. John Malkovich has stated in interviews he only does film work exclusively for the money just so he can support his family and do his stage work for free.
Whenever I read these posts asking why a certain actor has abandoned Broadway, its quite apparent it's a young person asking this as adult minds know the reality of living and the compromises adults make in order to live.
Literally every b'way actor? No. Or Bway would be dark.
Yes, many make the trek, if they don't have anything going on in NY. But they don't do it every year.
