I am really excited about this. Bull Durham is my all-time favorite movie. For me, this will be perfect if Laura Osnes is cast as Annie Savoy.

I would guess Annie to be about 34. Laura is now 28, so it wouldn't be too much of a stretch.

I wonder if this will have a better shot than ROCKY. I don't see a baseball diamond coming into the house for the Finale, but with a better score than ROCKY it could hit a home run .

Please don't turn this wonderful movie into a Broadway musical. Can't we just leave a wonderful movie as is and have some original Broadway musicals.

Why can't we do both? Bull Durham has a really good love triangle for a musical, and a nice, eccentric feel to the world of minor league baseball -- let's hope they don't make it glitzy and generic, like Flashdance. It could have the kind of authentic flavor I miss in Broadway musicals.

IMO - the problem is that original work is so seldom in comparison to a hit movie being made into a musical. You are right, story has a nice love triangle to it but I don't see stage version capturing the feel of minor league baseball. Some of the best scenes are action scenes and don't think stage can do that properly. Maybe they can because I would have never dreamed "Rocky" could be made into a musical either - lol

I've listened to about 8 songs from the soundtrack and read the book. It's actually pretty good -- score reminds me a little bit of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas with it's slightly country feel (though there are some good slow Broadway numbers). Book closely follows the movie. I understand Will Swenson is going to play Crash in the out of town. We need new voices on broadway, so I"m happy with the creative.

You mean musicals like In My Life, The Story of My Life or Glory Days? Or by "original" do you mean "may be adapted from a source other than a movie or at least an older movie that we might not be as familiar with"?

Do really bad musicals with original books/scores get a free pass? If so, I should get cracking and see if I can whip out a Tony winner by this weekend.

why isn't anyone developing FIELD OF DREAMS yet? It seems like a natural choice, if we're talking Kevin Costner baseball movies. Would probably work pretty well as a musical

The songwriter is a somewhat-established folk artist. Nice stuff, but standard fare of its type. The part of her output that I know is ballad-heavy with vague and general lyrics. She may have the chops to create more theatrical songs, though.

Possibly more problematic - the book is by a former baseball player turned movie director/screenwriter (including the screenplay for Bull Durham), associated with sports-oriented films. No perceivable experience in live theatre. Screenwriters with no theatre experience have a relatively poor track record in theatre (9 to 5, Big Fish, Leap of Faith). Writing for movies and writing for theatre are not (contrary to what seems to be popular opinion) the same thing.

I don't think of it as a story that sings, personally, but who knows?

Something like "Next To Normal" comes to mind immediately. I guess what I am trying to say is that I am tired of "jukebox" musicals or musicals adapted from a hit movie.

This isn't a jukebox musical. And is this film really considered a hit movie? I don't know what was considered a hit in the 80s. I'd never seen it until very recently.

While I get your point, 100% original shows are difficult to create, produce, etc. If they were easy, we'd have a lot more of them.

I know it is not a jukebox musical and said I was tired of them and musicals being made from "hit" movies. I truly understand original musicals are not easy and probably hard to get money to back them but still wish more could make it to Broadway.

The movie was a significant hit at the time and has been in circulation ever since. Sports Illustrated declared it the greatest sports movie ever made, so, yes, it was a hit movie.
