I asked for your opinion andyou responded—-> thank you. I think your assessment is unnecessarilyharsh and not what I experienced. Peck’s choreography of the beach scene is significantly more beautiful and elegant than in the original Carouselchoreographedby, I think, Agnes de Mille (See You Tube and Bambi Linn [Louise] in the originalperformance; its laughable and beyond awful). Regarding acting, the two New York City Ballet dancers you described as terrible (or gradations thereof) were, in my view, charming, connected well with the audience, and charismatic. But that’s the beauty of opinions. You have yours and I have mine. I bet you like vanilla ice cream; I hate it..... I like chocolate"
You recently made a profile and have only been posting about how great this production is. Literally every post you've posted. We all know a shrill when we see one. I'm sorry that people don't like the show you're working for but chill out. You've more than given yourself away.

Paul Alexander Nolan?

Just so glad that my first exposure to CAROUSEL live was at Lincoln Center in 1994.
As I’ve said in an old post, i flew to New York from Los Angeles to see this. I also flew my parents in from Boston to see this with me.
My parents were not really theatre goers, but they loved the production. Several months later, i was watching the Tony Awards back in Los Angeles. All of the sudden, my phone rang and it was my parents calling from Boston. I remember my mother exclaiming, “Our Audra won! Our Audra won!”
Years later, i got to tell Audra that story at an after-party for a Sondheim concert performance at Ravinia in Chicago. I think it might’ve been PASSION.
My father passed on New Year’s Day 2010. My mother is now in the final stages of Alzheimer’s in a Massachusetts nursing home.
I will always associate CAROUSEL with the great experience i shared with my parents. We saw the Nathan Lane revival of GUYS AND DOLLS that weekend, too. My parents calling me on Tony night that year was amazing... I didn’t even know they knew what the Tony Awards were,
I saw the 2018 preview performance of CAROUSEL on Saturday March 17th at 2:00 PM. Glad I did not take many of these harsh reviews too seriously. I still went.
In Spring 2015, I saw CAROUSEL done by the Chicago Lyric Opera with Steven Pasquale. Laura Osnes, Matthew Hydzik, Charlotte D'Amboise, Jenn Gambatese, Denyce Graves. Jarrod Emick and Tony Roberts. I was hoping CAROUSEL would head to Broadway in some form.
I also saw the tour first stop (in Houston) of the full Lincoln Center/National Theater production which did include the revolving stage. I remember the sexual/violent edge of Kenneth MacMillan's ballet choreography (which can be found on YouTube). The opening is not as flashy and the Lincoln center production (which also can be viewed on YouTube).
Jessie Mueller and Joshua Henry give the show a realistic animal chemistry. You know the relationship is in trouble from the start. It's much like when you meet a couple, and you get a whiff that the relationship is all about the sex. One person is dominate and the other is submissive. Bad decisions are made. You know there will be a train wreck. Their voices are great. I want to see it again. It's a totally different view of these characters compared to any other production.
The Peck choreography works fine. It's obviously bland compared to the great MacMillan. I would guess he is still tweaking it. A nice surprise was the very "butch" performance Amar Ramasar as Jigger. Principal NYCBallet dancer from the Bronx. Was glad I did not pay attention to the Playbill until after - to know I have seen him dance at the Koch Theater.
I do agree that Lindsay Mandez often steals the show.
How often is one of the greatest American musical on Broadway? It's not as elaborate as the Lincoln Center production. That is not the point. Would you have skipped Patti Lupone in Sweeney Todd because the sets were simple? The show is worth seeing. The staging is good. There is probably still some tuning going on. I want to go back.

Very interesting!

It's very interesting that you just joined today and are giving this production such praise. I mean literally every single word was so correctly placed. It truly seems as if you're in the show or have some connection to the show. And stating several times that you'll be going back. And please explain what different view of these characters are different from any other that you've ever seen in a Carousel Production. Because you're obviously seeing another show that the other hundreds of posters have seen.
I have a pretty solid hypothesis that Schmuli is either the actress playing Louise (doubtful) or a family/friend of the actress playing Louise. They've shrilled for the production but particularly Louise. Even suggesting that the actress might be remembered come Tony Nominations?

How many Carousel shrills do we NEED?!"
I think the word you're looking for is "shill".

"Michael Riedel...The Perez Hilton of the New York Theatre scene" - Craig Hepworth, What's On Stage
I often visit New York and see a number of shows. It's related to a friend needing a dog sitter when she travels. I can work remotely from her apartment with my laptop. Since I am not paying for lodging, I can feel better about spending on tickets. I am not in the entertainment industry. I live in Austin Texas. I make a point to visit Dallas, Houston, New York, Chicago and London for theater.
My ticket for Carousel was for Saturday night. There was a special opportunity for me to do some photography that evening. Telecharge allowed me to trade the ticket for the matinee. I mention this because: after reading the reviews on this site, I almost did not go. I did not think that Telecharge would trade the ticket. I did not have time to coordinate giving it to a friend. Am so glad worked it out with Telecharge.
The 1994 staging was great. The choreography does not have the sexual and violent edge (watch it sometime on YouTube). I am a fan of Sir Kenneth MacMillan's ballets like Manon. I saw an amazing production of it at the Paris Opera in 2012. In the third act, there is a scene where her jailer has his back to the audience and he pushes her face down to his crotch. His ballets are that graphic. It totally made sense for the National Theater to get him to choreograph CAROUSEL.
I don't visit the chat board for this site often. I was curious what people were saying. Am glad I did not give it much weight and saw it for myself. Joshua Henry has and amazing voice. The attraction between them is all about sex. You know it's a bad match from the start (as many young relationships often are). There is nothing incoherent about a story like this. I saw interesting things about their relationship that I have not seen before in other productions. It would be sad to miss because it's being ripped apart on this chat board.
I saw this production very early in previews and while I didn’t think it was as bad as this thread makes it out to be, it definitely felt “too safe”. I was expecting more spectacle, and everything aside from the choreography felt uninspired.
Still, I hope we at least get a nice cast recording from this production because the orchestrations and vocal performances were lovely. Rooting for Lindsay Mendez to get a Tony, she really stole the show for me.
Hello. I am a regular average person. I am from middle America and have never seen a musical before and I just joined today.
So believe me when I say that this Carousel currently on the Broadway is the greatest musical that has ever been presented. I love it so much I will be going back many times and you should too. I love Jessie and Joshua - they are amazing actors and do the "non acting" thing to draw you in make you see what amazing actors they are. And the choreography is better than Agnes DeMille. What has she done lately?
And that carousel! I felt like I was a fair. And the Louise...what can I say? Can we just give her the Tony now? She would make an incredible Blanche DuBois or Lady McBeth.
I am not a shill or do I know Louise's neighbor's dog walker. But I am getting on the phone now to order tickets to five more performances and you should too.
