...and if it should be revived, please hire a more efficient and inventive choreographer than Warren Carlyle ! He's been overrated and overused. He's clearly out of his league with Ballet dancers such as Tiler Peck And Robert Fairchild. The dances need to be both stunning and dramatically effective. Carlyle is all wrong !
"and the excellent John Cullum, in the dual roles of the Starkeeper and Dr. Seldon, who presides over the high school graduation of Julie and Billy’s daughter, Louise (played by the thoroughly enchanting Tiler Peck, a principal dancer with New York City Ballet).
Paired opposite Robert Fairchild, another terrific principal dancer from the same company, Ms. Peck all but stops the show with her radiant performance in the second-act ballet, choreographed skillfully if somewhat generically by Warren Carlyle."
How were Tiler Peck and Robbie Fairchild in their pas de deux?? They are two of my favorite NYCB principles

I wouldn't say it's harsh criticism though, and he does note that Gunn's performance did improve as the show went on. I would say it isn't a rave without critical commentary, but still a big fat stamp of approval in my book. :)
Very happy to see Stephanie Blythe and Jessie Mueller getting across the board wonderful notices both in these and the rest of the reviews. Backstage actually seemed to favor Mueller over O'Hara and wasn't particularly positive about the show.
"The heroine of the evening is Jessie Mueller, as Carrie. Despite needing to co-exist with a production that has scrubbed out every bit of sexuality and emotional darkness it can, Mueller manages to be fresh, spontaneous, and genuine. Her “Mr. Snow” is a delight."
Backstage Review
I'e seen Fairchild's Apollo, and he's brilliant. It's too bad that the choreography seems to be underwhelming. I still say for a concert they may as well just have recreated DeMille's choreography or Kenneth MacMillan's from the Hytner production...
Did they just do the Act II ballet, or did they also choreograph bits like the long June dance break?
How is Kate Burton in the show?

From New York Post review:
"O’Hara’s light, true soprano radiated warmth in “If I Loved You,” then soared to the evening’s absolute high point, exalting the ballad “What’s the Use of Wondrin’?” into a clear-eyed hymn to unconditional love."
Sounds like Kelli O'Hara is wonderful, as usual.

I am just loving that these reviews (minus Backstage) really reflect how I felt seeing the show. For whatever reason, I don't end up usually agreeing with reviews bad or good. This production transcends that, apparently. Love!
What was the running time? Trying to figure out my train schedule...
Just a smidge over 2 hours.
Oh, that short? Excellent! For some reason I had it in my head Carousel was a three hour affair but it's been a while.

The book has been cut that's one reason it's shorter and a few dances have been trimmed too. I don't think any songs have been cut by much .
I would hope not, considering the music seems to be the main point--I'm glad they included Highest Judge.
Still curious about the cuts, but I suppose I can geek out once I have it recorded from TV and watch it while following with the libretto.

Where should I look on the website for Rush? I put in the Rush discount code (after I selected two seats, since I couldn't find a way to do it before a selection) and it changed it to something like "1852 tickets available for Student Rush," but there was no discount to the ticket I selected, and no tickets were changed in price.
Does something different happen when they're "released"?
I believe you need to do it late in the day, someone said after 2 p.m., for that same day's show. Also, if LIncoln Center has already sold enough seats, they may not need to offer the RUSH discount. It's a day by day thing. Do you have a student ID? You'll need that when you pick up your tix. There's a discount for seniors too.
Can you buy more than one rush ticket online?
So...because of the folks here, I grabbed a First Tier ticket at 5:30 yesterday.
Bitches, it was an ugly cry of a show. An UGLY cry.
The Phil sounds extraordinary playing this score. It was an overwhelming tidal wave of sound that just crashed over the audience. The vocal performances were magnificent (though I hate the amplification at Avery Fischer). O'Hara was radiant, Mueller was lovely, Blythe was majestic. Hensley was overqualified for role of Jigger in the most wonderful way. Daniely was, once again, a terrific Enoch Snow. I agree a titch with Isherwood regarding Gunn. There's nothing really dangerous about him. But he sounded extraordinary. The end of Soliloquy was spine-tingling. I just don't think he mined the earlier parts of the song for all it's worth. But, frankly, it was a small price to pay. Burton was marvelously over-the-top and the ensemble (which contained a few friends) was exquisite.
As for the Ballet, there simply wasn't enough playing space on the stage to stage it to completeness...but LORD was it gorgeous. GORGEOUS. Tiler Peck was perfection. Absolute, beautiful perfection. Fairchild was a great partner. But it was really all about Peck. She was a wonder.
And John Cullum was a disaster...for my emotional state. He uttered his first line and I was DONE. Sobbing. Which is bizarre cause he was really just likable and folksy and everything the role is supposed to be. Maybe cause I knew what was coming. Or maybe because this show was my beautiful love's favorite show and I just felt I needed to feel close to him last night (he passed away in 2011). But I was a wreck. A really ugly, unfortunate wreck.
OH...and speaking of knowing what was coming, I was kind of stunned by the shocked gasp that when up when Billy Bigelow (SPOILER: but really...is it a spoiler at this point???) stabs himself. I was like, 'You people are Jurrasic! How are you surprised????'
Perhaps it was the cutting of the script, but I never felt the view of domestic abuse was quaint or trivialized in any way. It never excuses Billy, or posits that he's simply misunderstood. It's a musical tragedy. And heartbreakingly beautiful tragedy...and last night's performance hilighted that. Would that I say Hytner's production. I'll just have to 'settle' for this.
A remarkable night. If you can get there, do it. If you can't set that F*CKing DVR.

^This makes me so sorry I can't see this in person. I can only imagine how stunning the Carousel Waltz sounds at the beginning with such a huge orchestra.
Looks like they may not be doing rush anymore.
From the site:
Student Rush tickets are available for the following dates:
Thursday, February 28 ($25)
Wednesday, March 6
Thursday, March 7
Saturday, March 9
Wednesday, March 13
Thursday, March 14
Friday, March 15
That is the same thing they did yesterday. The rush tickets for each show (if they do them) will be put online at 2pm today (if it follows the pattern of yesterday and Wednesday). You'll see the 28th disappear and the 1st appear as if by magic. Then you can pick any $95 seat and put in RUSH as the code and it will make it $25 in your shopping cart.
Went to the box office in person at 12:15 and they said they are not doing rush today and that the cheapest ticket for tonight is $97. Any chance for a reverse decision once later afternoon hits? Wah waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah. #theatreloverproblems
It wouldn't surprise me if they didn't do rush, other promotional prices they have offered for this run were not valid for tonight or Saturday night.
I was on hold for almost forty minutes on the phone, so I hung up, but it looks like no more rush or discounted seats.
To be fair, the 95$ orchestra seats that were made available for tonight and tomorrow are discounted from their original price.
I know it sucks not to have rush or more affordable options when money is tight (believe me, I know) but the reality is that these things exist only people people who truly want to see them are willing to scrape together the cost of a ticket. Well, and rich people who don't have to think twice about it. What you get in this production is well worth the 95$ cost, and even the 215$ cost, and while I sympathize that sometimes the money just isn't there, I wanna say that anyone who is on the fence...this one is worth the splurge.
