CONFIRMED: "Live from Lincoln..." to broadcast SOUTH PACIFIC 8/18 w/ O'Hara

Matthew Morrison, who originated the role of Lieutenant Joseph Cable in the current Broadway production of SOUTH PACIFIC, may be returning to the production in order to appear in the 'Live from Lincoln Center' performance on August 18, the Los Angeles Times reports. According to a Lincoln Center spokesman, Morrison's return will depend on his filming schedule for GLEE, the hit television show of which he is a star.

PBS will capture the sprawling the Lincoln Center Theater revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific Aug. 18 for broadcast on "Live from Lincoln Center." Three-time Tony Award-nominated actress Kelli O'Hara will return to the production earlier that month.

Leslie Wilcox, the President and CEO of PBS Hawaii says the following:

"Word is, PBS' LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER will bring to national television audiences the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific, which has won seven Tony Awards and which features Hawaii's Tony-nominated actress/singer Loretta Ables Sayre.

Ables Sayre has portrayed Bloody Mary, since the first acclaimed preview in March 2008.

A longtime successful Hawaii vocalist and sometime theater actress, Loretta got her big Broadway break at age 50. In a two-part LONG STORY SHORT, Loretta told me that her introduction to major stage productions was watching the shows on Hawaii public television. She remembers what it was like seeing the lights dim and the curtains open--and imagining what it would be like to be on that national stage. Now she knows.

And pretty soon, she'll likely know what it's like to be in one of those national PBS shows. LIVE AT LINCOLN CENTER reportedly is making plans to shoot the "South Pacific" production this summer."

Considering the type of shows filmed for LC's Live from Lincoln Center series, wouldn't South Pacific be a great candidate for future filming?

Possibly, but early word is that sales for the tour are disappointing in San Francisco. This may be the first Broadway revival of South Pacific, but the rest of the country sure has seen it a lot. Showing it on TV probably wouldn't help...

But I bet SOUTH PACIFIC probably has another year left in its NYC run. Its unlikely that the show would be shown for LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER until the very end - so that actually bodes well. It should be aired absolutely. And with O'Hara and Szot.

That's good to hear Lizzie, but I would expect the matinees for SOUTH PACIFIC to be the big sellers :)

As brilliant as the revival of SOUTH PACIFIC is, it may suffer on the road, just as the 902 revival of GUYS AND DOLLS did.

Rights are more restrictive for first-class productions and while Broadway hasn't seen a revival of SP in 40 years, we certainly have had multiple tours across the nation in that time -- good, bad and indifferent.

There is also something very special about the intimate space in NYC, the orchestra reveal, etc, that won't be replicated on the road.

I am annoyed with the tour schedule. They aren't hitting any city within easy distance of NJ until April 2010! And that is if you consider Hartford, CT "close".

I don't understand why it isn't coming to Washington, DC or Philadelphia sooner.

Well, I don't know what the rules are for professional productions playing near one another, but I know there is a 100 mile radius rule for high school productions to Broadway. Which means that my high school would not be able to perform South Pacific right now because it's on Broadway. We were able to do it before it opened though. That's also how we lost the right to do Oklahoma one year. I would imagine professional theater has more strict rules.

The SP tour will be in Boston in Nov/Dec 2009 at the Wang Theatre. Either three weeks or two.
