Hey! Thanks for the heads-up; I hadn't heard.
Bumping this now that the show is closing in a few months...
Any chance of this happening at all?
I could see it happening. But I highly doubt it would be distributed on DVD.
"Live from Lincoln Center" contracts don't allow DVD releases, so if this happens, it shouldn't be any different.
Not only do they not allow DVD releases, but if I remember correctly, it can only air a single time.
You see this is just another example of how outdated so many of these contracts are. In this age it's just insane for them not to release dvd's of these productions when 20 minutes after they air, lower quality copies will be available online for download/purchase whatever.
I believe they can only air it twice, like they did with The Light In The Piazza. It IS outdated, but if we can get this revival filmed- I don't really care...
I agree Jordan. With today's technology, it will be relatively easy to get a near-HD copy shortly after it airs. You'd think they'd just release an official copy and make some extra bucks!
Well I know it's not as easy as that and duplication and distribution is a lot of money, but it does seem strange to me that they (and many others) haven't looked into simple online purchasing of dvd's like Warner Bros. is doing. They make certain titles available for purchase only online since they know the distribution costs for them wouldn't return a profit since the titles aren't very desirable. This is a really great way to offer these things up and STILL make money off of it. And THAT is something more Broadway shows could do and people could stop justifying it by saying the costs would be too high to get them out there.
Furthermore, with tapings of such shows like Company or Sunday In The Park and others, it would make sense to have such shows on DVD. I do think that it is a bit odd that they wouldn't put South Pacific on DVD as well should it be filmed. It is a way to be sure that people bootleg it and I am sure that it is easier to get a DVD copy of the show that is homemade due to the fact that there are a lot of DVR's that can recored a show onto a blank DVD.
I'm not sure if this is "official" or not, but William Michals (Emile standby) announced this on his facebook page:
William Michals It's official...I'll be Emile June 1 to July 4, as well as every Tuesday until we close August 22. We will be going live on Live From Lincoln Center on August 18, but it's not scheduled to be me as Emile, of course.
William Michals
PLEASE let this be true!!
Telecharge doesn't sell tickets for an August 18 performance (which is a Wednesday), even though the rest of that week's schedule remains unchanged.
If they bleeped all the curse words in Contact how will they handle the nudity in South Pacific?
There's only one brief glimpse of a man's tuchus, so it shouldn't be a big deal.
I really hope this turns out to be true, though I wish it could have been with Kelli O'Hara and Matt Morrison.
That would be AMAZING. I agree that it would be amazing if they could get O'Hara and Morrison back for that performance. Come to think of it, if Morrison were in it, that would be a major coup to be able to market a potential DVD.
would ADORE to see this happen
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Can I purchase videos of Live From Lincoln Center programs?
Live From Lincoln Center programs are not available for purchase. Our programs are cleared for broadcast only, and our agreements with artists, guilds, and unions prohibit us from making them available in any other form.
-Are Live From Lincoln Center programs ever re-broadcast?
Local PBS stations can re-broadcast our programs once during the seven days immediately following the live broadcast. Check your local listings for more information.
-When do you tape the show?
Actually, the title says it all—it's LIVE from Lincoln Center! That means you're seeing it at the same time as the audience in the concert hall. West Coast viewers see exactly the same program, via tape-delay: there is no editing, no monkeying around, nothing up our sleeves!

Yea.. the idea that Broadway producers are ignoring this "great untapped revenue source" is quite frankly ludicrous. Even with very limited or even solely "on demand" distribution, the money that most things would generate wouldn't even come close to the money involved to license and film the content. The money that provides us with the wonderful "Live at Lincoln Center" comes from philanthropists and arts organizations, and even then it's only possible under the limited distribution agreement it is created under: no re-broadcast outside of the week it's originally broadcast and no home video offerings.
Theatre as a live event and theatre as a recorded event for home consumption are two very different things with vastly different audiences. We forget, here on this board filled with people who fit into both consumer categories, this fact. Just ask any distributor or producer of cast albums and they'll tell you. Unless you have a super hit like Wicked you're lucky if it ever breaks even, and that's WITH the advent of digital distribution options like iTunes and Amazon MP3.

Leslie Wilcox, the President and CEO of PBS Hawaii says the following:
"Word is, PBS' LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER will bring to national television audiences the Broadway revival of Rodgers & Hammerstein's South Pacific, which has won seven Tony Awards and which features Hawaii's Tony-nominated actress/singer Loretta Ables Sayre.
Ables Sayre has portrayed Bloody Mary, since the first acclaimed preview in March 2008.
A longtime successful Hawaii vocalist and sometime theater actress, Loretta got her big Broadway break at age 50. In a two-part LONG STORY SHORT, Loretta told me that her introduction to major stage productions was watching the shows on Hawaii public television. She remembers what it was like seeing the lights dim and the curtains open--and imagining what it would be like to be on that national stage. Now she knows.
And pretty soon, she'll likely know what it's like to be in one of those national PBS shows. LIVE AT LINCOLN CENTER reportedly is making plans to shoot the "South Pacific" production this summer."
"Ables Sayre also will be in the "Live From Lincoln Center" taping Aug. 18 of "South Pacific," before the show's Aug. 22 closing, for eventual airing on PBS. ..."
