I just moved to New York and one of the legendary spots I was looking forward to seeing was the Cafe Edison. I was sad to see that it has been closed for a while now!
So, my question for you folks is- is there anything along the lines of Cafe Edison that I should check out?

No idea when it opens but it's replacement is Friedman's Comfort Food. Same type of food and there are a few scattered around the city.

I think he more meant a replacement in terms of somewhere to go-post show, rather than the physical replacement of the restaurant.

Comfort food like Cafe Edison. Whether or not over time it will become a theater hangout is debatable. Cafe Edison was one of a kind. Supposedly some of the branches are Hell's Kitchen and Herald Square.

Dd: I understand your question (that it has nothing to do with food), but cannot answer it. I haven't heard if another establishment has become its replacement for bway folk. Others here may, however. (Many are still mourning its loss.)

When they first announced this a while back, I believe they said the food would be somewhat similar to what was at the Café Edison. We will have to wait and see when it opens exactly what is true or untrue. Until then, we are in a holding pattern.

I thought Bond 45 is moving into the space where the Edison was?
On the topic of Friedman's, I've only been to the one in Morningside, but I find the menu quite limited for a diner, and the food was okay, but not overwhelmingly great either.

To be fair, the food at the Edison wasn't exactly overwhelmingly great either. But the place was. The food was pretty mediocre except for the soups. I do miss it terribly.

To replace the mom and pop Cafe Edison with a similarly themed mini chain makes no sense. Especially after the huge public show of support the Cafe Edison had. The owner lied when he initially said a celebrity chef was moving in which is why Edison had to, JUST HAD TO, leave.
I won't be going to Friedman's or giving the Edison any of my hard-earned money. You can read more and comment on Facebook, Save Cafe Edison. https://www.facebook.com/groups/616146908496469/

Well, it could be that that deal fell through. It happens all the time.

Cafe Edison was like an old pair of slippers. They were nothing to write home about in the looks department but they were comfortable as anything .

I gather that once the owner and his wife died and the son took over a lot of bad blood developed between the restaurant and the hotel. I miss the place a lot, and I have no idea how much of what precipitated its closing was due to the breakdown in the relationship rather than a purely economic decision, but I've been told that some of it did. And it definitely wasn't the same once Harry died. And while there was a real charm to certain aspects of the eccentricity -- the handwritten signs everywhere, etc. -- I imagine if I was a hotel operator I would want the restaurant in my hotel to accept credit cards and behave like a more professionalized modern business. As a customer, I treasured all of that, but I doubt the Edison Hotel appreciated it.

Not to be a jerk, but it's been closed for over a year. Do you not have the Internet?
I guess as far as hangouts go, Westway is OK.

i do miss the Edison, but remain a Juniors man myself. And have always enjoyed Bond, but feel as if the grandeur will have to tone down a bit if the relocation happens.
