This is far from inspired casting, such a missed opportunity.

Cameron Diaz can't sing.

But she can't sing a lot better than Sandra Bullock can't sing.

I'm so glad they're going after "can't singers" for this movie.

I love Cameron. As someone mentioned earlier she consistently surprises with strong performances. I can totally see her have a ball with this role.

And while I hate when they cast non-singers for movie musicals, I think she can handle "Little Girls".

Ok - Now there's a reason to see this..

In my opinion, Diaz is the Carole Lombard of her generation.

This is a chance to push her talent a little farther without having to play Medea..or Hedda Gabler..

Brava!

Yes! Excellent analogy.

Cameron Diaz is a treasure. I can't get too excited about that role in that movie but I suspect she will be great.

They should just have Audra play grace again. She was magnificent.

Oh my god, I'd love it if Audra was Grace again. She was one of the amazing things about that Disney version, to me - Audra, Victor Garber, and Kathy Bates, in that order.

Since this is a massive rewrite of the original material with Jay-Z involved ...

I don't think they want "legit" voices anywhere near this movie.

I'm fine with the nonsinger casting since they've made such a point about saying this is far from a traditional version of the score. We've had two movies with the more traditional Broadway sound, so I'm very excited about this one. The casting of Diaz is inspired, she excels in this type of role and she'll actually have no trouble coming off as a mean but funny (not clownish like Burnett) Hannigan, much better casting than Bullock. Honestly with the Emma Thompson screenplay, the Will Gluck direction, little adorable Wallis as the lead and Diaz as Hannigan, I am so on board.

I hear they are changing the title. It will now be called Annie: The Help Prequel

Are people going to be uncomfortable seeing a white woman being nasty to a black girl? I would much rather see someone like Queen Latifah playing the role.

"So it's a white lady being mean to a little black girl? Hm. That won't be awkward at all."

You're joking when you say this right? What makes it more or less awkward than if she was white or if she was black being mean to a little white girl? (Nell Carter)

I am really not understanding why some people are already seeing this film as a mess or "getting worse and worse".

Quvenzhané Wallis has proved herself to have a good screen presence. Extremely powerful and effective.

Jamie Foxx, while not my favorite actor, is ridiculously talented and passionate about his projects.

Cameron Diaz is funny. I think she is a better choice than Sandra Bullock. The idea that 41 is too young for Ms Hannigan is the silliest thing I have ever heard.

Jay Z is an extremely talented artist and businessman. He has said many times that he has loved and been passionate about Annie since he was a little boy. I have faith in his ability to produce this music and adapt this into something fresh. Martin Charnin who owns the rights to Annie said "Jay-Z found something in a lyric and applied it to his own life, and it was absolutely wonderful." He has a lot of say in this adaptation according to the article. (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/jay-zs-annie-remake-meet-418033)

I'm not too interested either way. I was too young to appreciate it when it came out, but the Disney version really is great. Alan Cumming, Victor Garber, Kristin Chenoweth, Audra McDonald, Kathy Bates - what more could you want?

I know you. I know you. I know you.

Perhaps you haven't been paying attention? Are you familiar with the Paula Deen incident? She said something years ago that she is now getting raked over the coals for. Have you been paying attention to the George Zimmerman trial? There is every reason to believe that casting a white woman in this role is not a good idea.

Hahaha I don't mean to laugh at you but it is CRAZY for you to compare the murder of a teenager and a woman with a long string of racial insensitivity to a musical that I assume will not talk about annie being black. I will apologize to you if Cameron Diaz calls the little girl the n-word, tells her she wants to dress her as a slave for a plantation party, tells her not to stand next to a black board because she is so black and people wont be able to see her (all things paula deen did), or shoots her because she looks suspicious walking around Daddy Warbucks neighborhood and felt threatened because she was wearing a hoodie and carrying candy and big gulp. Then I will apologize and say you were right.

NYC4LIfe, people here have the strangest, sometimes scariest, (lack of) understanding about race and race relations. The fact that all threads concerning this film descend into "this production is an epic disaster," "will she still have red hair?" and "will they change her name?" kind of comments is hard proof of that. The whole "casting a white woman as Hannigan is a disaster" kind of comments truly baffle me as well.

ray-andallthatjazz86, Ok I am glad I am not the only one confused why people are discussing this. I am pretty sure there will be white, black, hispanic and asian girls in the orphanage and Annie will just happen to be black.

I think, it's fair to assume, that the movie going public will be able to understand that this will be a MOVIE starring MOVIE STARS who are ACTING in a MOVIE..I think we can trust they will understand that the nice Cameron Diaz is only acting and that a villian is a villian...

I don't give the average audience member that much credit or praise for taste and sophistication ...........but God almighty I don't think they really believe that Henry Cavill flies....

I can't believe I am saying this but I kind of agree with Goth, only to a small extent. There will always be the crazies who cry out and protest and boycott. So it's true in a way. But it's also true that if you're LOOKING for something to be offended by, you'll find it. Even if it's not actually there. So, who cares? Whatever. It is what it is.

Yeah. You're never going to please everyone. If the entire cast were black people would say why is the entire cast black. If the entire cast were white people would complain. If Grace was white and and Hannigan were black, people would complain that the black woman was the villain and be upset Warbucks wasn't with a black woman. If annie were white and hannigan black, people would complain the black woman was beating the white girl. If Warbucks were white and annie black, people would say why does the white man have to save the little black girl from despair. zzzzzzzzzz. It can go on and on.

In the end Liza's headband's "Who cares?" is a great statement. I am rooting for the project like I root for all Theatre to Screen projects. I want it to be good.

LOLOLOLOL

If Miss Hannigan calls Annie the N-word, my jaw would drop to the floor and then I would probably never stop laughing since that would be something along the lines of John Waters absurdity.
