Completely not interested in a film remake of Oliver. I'm more than happy with the brilliant adaptation that already exists.

Right with you. There is nothing wrong with the existing adaptation (except Oliver's creepy singing voice). I'm sure Mackintosh will go "darker" and "grittier" (I.e., humorless), and make the murder scene gory and in-your-face. Ugh.

I too would prefer a Miss Saigon movie, although there's really nothing anyone could ever do to make a helicopter landing and take off as exciting on film as it is on stage.
@Jovie-Last year, he said that he's aiming Samantha Barks for Nancy
I wish he would stop trying to make Samantha Barks happen.

Wouldn't Sony be somewhat involved in Oliver! as they distributed the original film? I think Cameron needs to focusing on trying to get Miss Saigon made into a film rather than remaking existing film musicals like Oliver and My Fair Lady,

disney...so true...but who knows what will happen by the time it comes to actually filming time!
Did we forget that Mackintosh was already working on Miss Saigon a while ago? ...he was eyeing Jessica Sanchez for Kim, remember?

I would love to see Oliver! revived on stage, but can't think of a single reason to remake it as a film.

Bet = Amanda Seyfried
Fagin= Hugh Jackman
Bill Sikes= Russell Crowe
Artful Dodger = Daniel Huttlestone

There! That's better!

We really don't need another Oliver film. Put Saigon on film and then put Oliver back on the Broadway stage. Problem solved.
Miss Saigon would probably work better on film than it did on stage. It's a very cinematic story and musical.
If you want to get an idea of how it might look, watch the last 30 minutes of (Best Picture winner) "The Deer Hunter."
Generally, I have no problems with remakes of even the best classic movies. But there are so few truly great movie musicals, even fewer great great movies made from stage musicals. Why remake one that was first rate?
I think a remake of Oliver! is unnecessary. The original is such a classic.

^ Exactly.
I was (and still am) interested in the idea of "Oliver!", the stage musical, performed live on TV like The Sound of Music. But another theatrically-released movie? Not for me.
It’d be nice to have a new updated version, but he really needs to just do the Miss Saigon Movie!
I'm socked by all the love for the original film. I find it difficult to watch. I wouldn't mind a new film if it was a more faithful adaptation of the stage version.
Sam Mendes directing a film based on his 1994 version wouldn't be bad at all.

We need an Oliver movie that's closer in tone to reality. Shani Wallis made Julie Andrews look like a homeless prostitute. The original movie was Oliver via Disney. Give us an abused, drug addicted, desperate Nancy who sings "As Long As He Needs Me" like she's holding on for her life.

OLIVER! Is probably one of the most organic movie musicals. The transitions between it's scenes and Onna white's splashy musical stagings are just flawless.

So this news necessarily mean he's not working on bringing Miss Saigon to screen or can it be he's planning to make both films? I really thought Miss Saigon was moving forward.
Good point.
I didn't quite get that this was an "either or" scenario myself.
Cameron has probably got several musical film projects in development, and whichever lands with the most "green lights" is the one he'll jump on.

Mark Lester's singing voice in OLIVER! was dubbed by Kathe Green, the daughter of the film's music director, Johnny Green. Apparently they had several boys who auditioned for the dubbing job, but they all had very legit "Broadway" sounding voices which did not match Lester's soft-spoken speaking voice. But Green was able to imitate Lester's voice perfectly and she got the job.
