Other than the fact that Hamilton has gotten everyone interested in the founding fathers, one of the main reasons for doing this show (or so it seems from the ads) is to show t that many of the issues of 1776 are still relevant today. By dressing them in modern day costumes, it makes the point that many of the events of 1776 could easily take place in 2016.

Why invest money in costumes for a 5 or 6 performance run? It is basically a staged concert and not a full fledged revival.
Long before Shakespeare dressed Roman senators, Greek gods, Amazonian and Goth queens, Tyrean princes and Trojan warriors as Elizabethans, audiences have understood the wisdom of Theateraddiction's response.
To destroy a great show?
Saw the original and the revival at the Gershwin. Cannot see a reason to see this with guys in suits which kind of destroys the mood of the whole thing.

Saw it last night. It took a bit of getting used to, but the audience did seem to acclimate to the modern dress. I saw the original four times during my student days, and this time a line got applause that never did before: Hopkins' remark about never coming across an issue or topic that couldn't be debated. Lots of folks with opinions about the future of the Supreme Court were obviously in attendance.

That's what Chicago thought, and we've been stuck with that cheap ass production forever now!
1776 were specialized costumes unlike those for Chicago. Why buy costumes for 1776 ? When would you use them again?
Mmmmm. They're probably more comfortable and it's a bitch to powder a wig every morning.
This is why the whole gang of them were in a rebellious mood. They were pissed off all day long.
