Caroline is an incredibly challenging piece of musical theatre but is also incredibly fulfilling. The show is about people, it is about the characters, it is not about stand alone solos (though it isn't opposed to them) it is about, simply put, change. Broadway right now is in its pendulum swing where it favors commercialism over experiment theatricality, it isn't necessarily good or bad, it's just the wrong time for Caroline. This show will prove to be one of the new milleniums best.
Its an incredible show, i dont see y its life on broadway was so short.

Mixed reviews + only one Tony win + an ineffective marketing campaign + a show too challenging for mainstream tastes = a limited run.

I heard it was forced out. Anyways, why didn't this show tour? Would it not have translated well to touring audiences?
It did tour. Most of the Broadway cast was in it. In fact, I think Dottie and the little boy were the only characters that were re-cast for the tour. I saw it when it came to LA and it was amazing. Would go back in a flash if it came back to LA.

Caroline would be hard to tour because of the need for child actors. Anytime you have kids on the road you need tutors and parents and a whole mess of expenses *or* you need to have local kids filling in, which in actual roles (such as Noah) is a big risk to take.
That said, Caroline has a solid future ahead in regional and amateur, starting with its May run in DC.

"Les Mis" managed just fine. Ragtime and Showboat also managed just fine. The show didn't really tour. If I recall, the show closed at the time a hole appeared in the schedule at the Ahmanson in LA, and it was determined to go ahead and bring it in. It moved to SF just to keep it going. But technically it wasn't really a tour.

It got wonderful reviews in San Fransisco, I heard. I wonder why they were so much better than in New York. (I loved the show.)

My director loved this show - so we talked about it.
It is brilliant - and I wish I wasn't turned off so much by it when it was on Bway.
I didn't know Tesori did the music for the Twelfth Night - I love the CD.
I just read that they are thinking of getting the original cast together for a benefit concert. Nothing concrete. I think it is just an idea at this point.
It's such an intelligent show, but BWAY goers love commericial.

"Caroline or Change" was one of the best nights I have ever had in the theater. Saw the show 7 times here in New York and once in LA. Anika Noni Rose gave one of the finest performances in years and Tonya Pinkins was robbed of that Tony!!
Sing it!
For those of you in the Boston area, "Caroline, or Change" is also being produced by the SpeakEasy Stage Company in Boston in the Spring!
