Cherry Street Cafe sequence from Rags. The fade-out is a disappointment because that's the best song in the score.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.

Cast Albums with Fade-outs

The concept album of JCS (Brown Album) was recorded as a typical rock/pop album more so than a stage score, so it's full of fade-outs. Still is on some cast recordings.

Cast Albums with Fade-outs

^Pretty much all of the Jesus Christ Superstar cast recordings have tracks that fade out or they don't include all of the songs. It's supremely irritating. There basically isn't a complete recording of the stage score in English except for a foreign concert cast recording that was performed in English.

Fade outs are my biggest cast album pet peeve and it actually causes me to not want to listen to certain recordings just because of the fade outs. I feel like it may have started due to the lack of space on single LP releases back in the day, but today CDs and digital releases eliminate that space limitation. I really wish this trend would die out, but unfortunately it's still alive and well on the new Pippin cast album and several other recent releases.

^That's different. They actually performed it that way. I don't consider that a fade out in the same way that "Spread a Little Sunshine" has music and vocals that are electronically faded out on the cast album, but performed with a button on stage.

Cast Albums with Fade-outs

Likely the reason fade outs are so common on some of the recordings listed is because they were made by labels not known for musical theater recordings, and were produced with a pop sensibility. "The Wiz" was recorded by Atlantic, "Pippin" by Motown, and "Dreamgirls" by Geffen, each of which are (or were) well known pop labels with little or no experience with cast recording. Geffen's recording of "Little Shop Of Horrors" also has a fade out on "Suppertime."
