Has anyone heard anything on possible cast recordings for Company and Mrs. Doubtfire? Are they pausing recordings for for Covid? I would love a recording of Matt Doyle's Not Getting Married Today and while I wasn't a huge fan of Mrs Doubtfire, I did enjoy Rob's performance.
Maybe when the Omicron wave dies down, Doubtfire can use a small part of their hiatus to record a cast album. In that NYT interview with McCollum yesterday, in my mind he shut down the thought of a SIX Broadway cast recording, saying the show is doing well partially because of a "popular cast album."
Hoping we get one for Company but in the meantime I can't wait for Flying Over Sunset.
I hope for a Company cast album but I do not anticipate one since they already recorded the London cast with Patti LuPone and are selling that album at the merch stand.
I've said it before, but I'd be extremely surprised if Company doesn't get a new cast recording. I'm assuming they're waiting for Omicron to peak before even attempting a recording. This is one of the last two productions Sondheim was involved with, and it would be a lovely tribute to him. Also, there are several changes to lyrics and orchestrations since London. The London recording just isn't that good, the orchestra sounds tinny for some reason, and many of the supporting performances are weak compared to their Broadway counterparts. While Craig has a pleasant voice, she doesn't bring the nuance to the lyrics like Lenk does. I think we definitely need the Broadway cast preserved, and I would love to hear the orchestra not sound tinny on recording.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
On COMPANY - It's incredibly unlikely that they would record a new album of the same production that already had one in London. Especially since every review (even the one's that loved the show, as I did) mentioned that Katrina didn't have the vocal range to sing two of the biggest songs in the show. Patti's "Ladies Who Lunch" already exists on the other album.
Get upset if you want to, but with all shows having a tough time right now, they're not going to drop that much money on another recording.
