YAY! Looking forward to it, I guess they're drumming up business for the film release nation-wide shortly.

Bizarre but- you're joking.
Hoping for Side By Side!
I hope they give THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST a scene to perform as well.

Since they want to (presumably) showcase the entire cast, I think SIDE BY SIDE is a safe bet.
I don't get it. They're using this time when they could showcase scenes from the nominated plays with a star like Chris Rock. These awards miss the mark more and more every single year.
How many songs is Harris going to be singing this year? Will he be doing his interpretation of all the nominated musicals as well?

It does seem odd for a theater awards show to be giving so much attention to a film of a limited run of a semi-staged concert of a musical performed by the Philharmonic. Maybe at the Oscars they will have a select performance of scenes from current Broadway shows. But it is all ratings, folks, just ratings.
I would agree with you if that made sense in this case, wonkit. CBS will not pull in ONE viewer who was not planning to watch the show already with the announcement that a scene from COMPANY will be performed.
I think they should do Company as the opening number for the telecast.
And I also really wish they had at least some of the plays doing scenes.

If Stephen Colbert mentions it on The Colbert Report, there will certainly be some new viewers, though not a substantial ratings bump.
I had actually forgotten Colbert was in this. But no, I can't see the average person who doesn't have any interest in the show sitting through it waiting to see him for a few minutes.
Why is no one outraged about this, the way they were about the possible inclusion of Priscilla and Spiderman on the telecast? Because it's a Sondheim show?
(and for the record, I don't think any of them belong on the telecast)

CBS...Neil Patrick Harris...hosting...cross-promotion.
I actually wanted to see "Company" in spite of Harris, but the whole move is coming off as very shilly.
However, unless the CompanyonScreen website has been updated very recently or is leaving out a whole bunch of cities, it doesn't even look like it's coming anywhere near me.

A friend of mine lives in Wyoming and only one theatre in the entire state is getting it. So, it seems to me the only way to see it for a lot of people will be the number on the Tony telecast.
It will also be out on DVD later this year.
I agree with Jordan. I don't think it's gonna have a positive effect ratings-wise, although I'm hoping that it would. I wish they'd do "Ladies Who Lunch" also just so I can hear Patti sing a solo.

Good detective work there.
I do think there will be a few people looking for Colbert that might sit through at least an hour or so of the Tonys before they get discouraged / bored.

I think it's much more fitting than having SPIDER-MAN or PRISCILLA on. It's certainly interesting how that rule has gone out the window.

I'm in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area of NY and not a single theatre within 100 or so miles is showing it. We get all the Met stuff, Rent, Fela, Les Mis etc etc, but not this? I realize a different company (Screenvision?) is handling it, but still...
I don't think there are many stand-alone moments from plays that could be performed on the Tony telecast without making everyone very uncomfortable.
Jordan- is the dvd release a definite thing?
How could you FORGET that Stephen Colbert was in it?
Colbert and Neil Patrick Harris can potentially bring large TV audiences to a broadcast that is perennially in danger of being canceled.
This is the most exciting thing that's happened to the Tony awards in decades.
