beautywickedlover,
It's not about the size of the sets, but rather the number of seats they need to sell each performance to be profitable with their running costs.
... and the Belasco is a dump. A (once) beautiful, beautiful dump.
I don't think I've been there since FOLLIES... has it been renovated? So much fabulous history and a shame to see it falling apart as it was then (is?).
P
It is being renovated right now.
And the interior was distressed especially for Follies. It doesn't always look like that, although the theatre was poorly cared for over the last 35 years.
Yes, Smaxie... it was never the same after ROCKY HORROR tore it to shreds back in the 70s. Pity.
P
I have to say the Broadway seems too big for this. I saw it from the cheap seats at the 5th Avenue and felt miles away from the action. Since the sets are relatively minimal and the action is really pretty small, I think it would register better in a different theater. The Marquis wouldn't be a bad fit (even if it's ugly as sin).
That said, call me crazy, but I really think this is more Cry-Baby than Hairspray and won't last more than a year unless they do some serious work, especially on the book. Why do people let McNally near their musicals??
^^^^^
Maybe because of Ragtime, Full Monty, Kiss of the Spiderwoman .....
I LOVE McNally's book for THE RINK. I think it works great and that score is just sublime.
What is wrong with me?
P
I hope Aaron Tveit and Norbert Leo Butz are involved again!

They better lure Matthew Morrison if they can for young Frank if they want a chance of staying power with his elan to pull it off. Tarzan crashed without him.
They better catch Matt while and if they can. The worst that could happen is he has to leave periodically for GLEE. His vocal interpretation on the score would be worth the risk.

He would not do it. He is incredibly busy with Glee, it's obviously becoming a huge hit. Also isn't he a little old? And I think they are pretty set on Aaron.
While I personally love Matthew Morrison, I think Aaron is perfect in the role as Frank Jr. I thought his singing and acting were great and couldn't see anyone else in the role for the Broadway transfer.
And no offense to Matthew, but he doesn't look like he can pass for a teenager any longer.

I was just responding to the posting saying no roles were cast if that is true.
And I thought I read that all the GLEE cast is free now unless they call them back to shoot more.
And Drunk Chita, unlike some, I realize that what you're saying is your opinion and I have no problem with it.

What do you mean? Did they already film the whole season? I doubt that... I have no idea how fast hey do those kinds of things.
And if you are referring to the Glee thread, thank you. It's hard on here to say something without having a bunch of people tell you you are wrong.

What I recall reading is that GLEE filmed so many episodes, maybe 13. The cast was together all the time for a while doing promo, and now they are free and have gone their own ways unless they get called back because more episodes are to be created. Some article a week or two ago.
It's up to the sponsors whether GLEE will continue to be a go. The only question that I see is whether the sponsors will buy the ads that support the show.
And the big news is none of this but the fact that Matt now has a cute mustache and a little beard. While I generally dislike those, on him it looks good.

Wasn't the real life situation that he was a teenager who did not look like a teenager but much older? I'm not all that familiar with the story, but I always thought that was how he was able to get away with all the stunts he pulled.
Is this still set to open late Jan 2010?
Have they released any of the music for this show yet? I'm curious what the sound will be like.

TimesSquare, this is a difference of opinion then. I would list all three of those as reasons he should NOT be doing books. I love Ragtime but think the book is its weakest link. I think Spiderwoman succeeded in spite of a very weak book because of an outstanding performance from Chita and an average Kander and Ebb score (which still puts it leagues ahead of others). Full Monty is, to me, a disaster. Hated the book. Hated the score. Loved the cast, though. I firmly believe a better book writer could have made each of those shows much stronger than they actually are.
I actually don't know the book of The Rink at all. Maybe I'd find that his shining spot, Pgenre. :)
I also heard they filmed most of Glee a while back...and i'm pretty sure Aaron is tied to the role, or wants to be. Hasn't he been reading/competing for the job even during his Wicked days? I also think he's good for the role...and if they make the changes everyone is calling for and its sucessful, it'd be a big role/opportunity for him.

Aaron was the best thing about the show. Replacing him would not be a good idea.
I would see Matt in pretty much anything, but I do like Aaron in the role.
And yes, they have shot 13 episodes of Glee, and I read that they could be called back for 9 more, I think. I've read too many articles on this damn show.
personally I'd rather see Michael Arden in the lead thatn Aaron Tveit.. where has he gone... don't get me wrong, I love Tveit, but Arden's voice is much better.. why is he not auditioning for/getting these roles.. I believe he's only 2 years older than Aaron
Given the reviews that Tveit (and most of the principle cast, for that matter) received out of town, I highly, highly, highly doubt they'd replace any of them. Tveit, in particular, received reviews of the "star-making performance" variety.
Agreed, and I haven't heard of him auditioning for anything else. As much as I'd love N2N to stay open for a long time, I don't count on it being open in a year, thus he'd be ready to move on. Even if it does, as much as someone likes playing a role they originated, I'd have to think it'd get old after a while. It could be a huge break for him.
