Morning after...where do we stand? How will the events of last night affect shows on Broadway?

THE VISIT just sent out a new promo code this morning that's good thru June 30th. For whatever that's worth...

It was my favorite show of the entire season and I think Chita should have won since I do think she gave the best performance in that category. I know it won't happen, but nothing would make me happier than to have people suddenly discover this show and help keep it open for just a little while longer.

Amen, Jordan! Although I liked both Something Rotten! and Fun Home (which is a very deserving winner, of course), I enjoyed The Visit the most of any musical I saw this season!

I really, REALLY wanted to like the Visit. I hate any show closing, honestly, although they do make room for new things to come, but I don't wish it any ill will. It was excellently performed for the most part, I just did not connect with it in any way.

I was kind of hoping Tonys performances would push me to go see some of the show I have no seen yet, especially those possibly closing soon. Sadly, nothing really stood out for me. I thought I would at least mildly enjoy Paris (since I do love me some Gershwin) but I found the whole thing some kind of run-around wash.

See Rotten as we believe it was the Best musical we saw this season.

Feel sorry for The Visit. It deserved a better fate.

The album for the Visit comes out on June 26th I believe. So perhaps they are keeping it open til then? (Not smart money wise, but those producers are pretty loaded and passionate about the show. Maybe they're fine losing money on this one. Many of them made money on It's Only a Play).

As for other under-performing shows: Do we think Wolf Hall makes it to its scheduled closing date? They are already having trouble filling seats, and lost their only real potential acting win (Parker) with just one Tony for costumes.

I spoke with someone from Hand to God, who said the summer is "probably going to be rough" but thinks there is enough advance sales and interest to push it through and close in late August/early September.

I know this has been posted on other threads, but it also belongs here:

First Caualty:  The Visit.

I really hope I get to see The Visit while it is still around! Chita is my hero!

Well that was quick, The Visit to shutter this Sunday and as predicted by many in the discussion to this original question.

So sad for all involved.

And now Gigi joins the post Tony's casualties list.

Clearly there in no room for sentiment nor respect for the calibre of professionals involved.

Hard-headed business decisions are the drivers in the business we call show.

Another one of the predictions made by those contributors earlier in these comments.

On The Town is being talked about post Tonys

A new block of tickets has been made available. A more telling statement is it is on TDF for 13 dates which is the most I have ever seen since it started appearing.

A more realistic closing comes either after July 4 or shortly thereafter. A shame as it is a first class production but this is the rough & tumble known as Broadway.

"Clearly there in no room for sentiment nor respect for the calibre of professionals involved. Hard-headed business decisions are the drivers in the business we call show."

To what are you referring here?  The decision to close?  Sentiment and respect for professionals are admirable qualities, but they don't pay the bills.  If a show can't break even, who should pay to keep it open?  Hundreds of thousands of dollars a week?  I'm always baffled by those irritated with "business" decisions, as if they are capricious and insulting to art and artists, when payrolls are so readily ignored.  At the end of the day -- every day -- everyone is salaried. That means someone has to cough up filthy lucre to cover them. As to why shows close, it's really that simple.

I agree with Auggie, Spotlight wth are you talking about? Gigi wasn't making enough money to cover their costs, so they're closing. It's that simple.

"I wonder if Harris may be throwing some money at it to keep it running since Burtka is in it."

At first I thought you meant Harriet Harris and was very amusingly confused.

I believe I'm agreeing with you both. I understand fully what makes a business successful.

I'm actually saying that economics are the drivers for shows.

My reference to 'sentiment' was especially about Kander and Ebbs The Visit, with Chita as the headline name. People talk about her in revered terms and yet the show fails to attract an audience.

I have read other posts in the build up to the show opening where people appeared genuinely excited to have her back on Broadway but not in sufficient numbers for the show to remain open.
