Dare I say it - Stritch was the one person I really didn't want to play Hattie. We've had that experience already...
A link to some footage of the original Hattie, Ethel Shutta doing Broadway Baby. Its interesting because I can really see a resemblance to Linda Lavin. I think she'll be great. And perhaps its just me but I can really see a resemblance between Alexis Smith and Sigourney Weaver...hmmm....
Ethel Shutta, "Broadway Baby"
I'm LOVIN' Linda Lavin as Hattie!
I want to know who is playing Carlotta and Stella now!!

And I just watched that rehearsal clip from the original production again and got transported. "Waiting Around for the Girls Upstairs" is pure genius...the whole of the show in one song, staged flawlessly.
And then that Ethel Shutta footage!
It's not just that Ethel Shutta kicks the cat, it's HOW she kicks the cat and what a surprise it is when she kicks the cat and her timing she kicks it.
So watch the way she sings "At my tiny flat it's just my cat" -- (and...KICK!) -- "a bed and a chair," and then watch the butch way she plants her feet when she sings "Still I'll stick it till I'm on a bill..." and then she takes a little jump-step and spreads her hands open across her face and sings joyously "...all over Times Square!"
I never liked that the three songs didn't button for applause but ended in "The Montage." Not only did it rob Ethel Shutta and Fifi D'Orsay (and the couple who did "Rain on the Roof") of their applause moments, it also created an intense competition between Ethel and Fifi for who could steal the most attention at the end of the montage.
I understand why they did it--they didn't want the show to seem like a revue of pastiche numbers--but as a 15-year-old in love with ALL the feisty old broads in the show, I wanted Ethel Shutta to end her song with a big solo finish.
Steve Martin would actually be a great Buddy, but Danny Burstein will also be terrific.
And now more speculation about Phyllis, Ben, Carlotta, Stella, and all the other great roles.
Just want to throw my vote out there for Arthur Rubin as Roscoe...he is fantastic.
How about shirley bassey for solangee?
Hmmm...I like. But you mean, DAME Shirley Bassey.
I would never want to see her as Carlotta, but I love watching her recklessly rewritten "I'm Still Here."

I still want Chita as Solange. I don't know if she'd take it though. Anyone but Montevecchi, please.
Someone on ATC has heard that Elaine Paige will be Carlotta.
It just doesn't seem like the right choice. I don't know if I'd buy her as an American sex symbol.

So do we not know who's playing Phyllis yet?

I just heard Terri White had been cast, but not who she is playing. Anyone?
The only role White would really be appropriate for is Stella.
White as Stella should be interesting.
I can't believe Paige was cast as Carlotta, she's so wrong for it, so lackluster, what a shame.

I have confirmed that Terri White is indeed Stella. She will sing the hell out of it!
I think Paige will make a fine Carlotta in the abstract, but it's a pity that a lot of the audience will not know who she is. "Follies" has always thrived on a wonderful art vs. life resonance between the actors and performers in the leads, and I am afraid some of that will be lost on American audiences seeing Paige.
OK. So far we have
Sally: Bernadette Peters
Phyllis: ?
Ben: ?
Buddy: Danny Burstein
Carlotta: Elaine Paige (rumor)
Stella: Terri White (not officially announced)
Hattie: Linda Lavin
Solange: ?
Honestly, the casting seems a bit uneven so far. I hope we get a killer Phyllis and Ben.
I know that there isn't a chance in hell for several reasons, the least of which being that she is COMPLETELY not the Phyllis type, but wouldn't it be crazy if Patti played her?
So far we have the shortest cast of FOLLIES in history! But I've just admittedly got that bee in my bonnet that as former showgirls, the ladies are supposed to be leggy, but I guess (though I'm not sure they are even taking height into consideration at all in the casting) its a good thing that there is a consistency to a cast of Weisman girls who are all under 5'4. Perhaps on stage they won't read as so tiny. To that end, I think Stockard Channing (5'3) would be a perfect Phyllis for this company.
