He did a lot more than Katy Perry did to be named musician of the year. Like actually being gay, for one thing.

What did he do? Well, he has given unstintingly of his time and talent to gay-oriented organizations/charities/programs; he has maintained a positive image of what gay people can and should be; he has said repeatedly that he feels grateful to be able to share his many talents with worthy causes, both gay- and non-gay oriented. Not to mention that he's one of the hardest working guys in the business, taking on many projects simultaneously to great effect.
