Now they just need to do one out on my side of the country.

Interesting - this was originally billed as a co=production with Porchlight Theatre Company. Now their name appears nowhere in the press release.
Porchlight is on a strange Equity contract that allows them to hire only ONE Equity actor per show, and still be considered an Equity company. I did not recognize one single name on the cast list. I have no idea if there are any Equity members in it.

YAY! I am loving all of these sit-down productions. I think "Wicked" has really helped opened a new wave of theatre-goers in Chicago. Can't wait to see "Urinetown"!

A pee-qual?
Okay dumb joke.
Anyways, I'm confused...the article lists people who make up the ensemble...but I thought Urinetown's "ensemble" was the people of Urinetown (Little Sally, Soupy Sue, for example). Are these additional people swings?

No, there are other ensemble members. They are indeed the people of Urinetown, but also double as Cladwell's cronies (ironically enough).

I know one of the ensemble members, and I think he's going to be understudying as well. I'm going to try to get myself in there when they start looking for Officer Lockstock replacements...you know, I think commerical theater in Chicago is GOOD thing.

Chicao has always had these theatregoers. Ever since Broadway In Chicago took over the management of ALL the downtown venues has Chicago been cheated of long-run shows. If it weren't for David Stone, Wicked and Spelling Bee wouldn't be there. Clear Channel has too much of a monopoly on theatres across the country, so it has no vested interest in keeping a show in any one city for too long. Disney Theatrical's head guy doesn't think Chicago can sustain long runs, despite Wicked having been sold-out for the past year, the three year run of Joseph, the nearly year long run of The Lion King, all of which had been sold-out the entire run, and countless other shows. Disney hates Chicago, because Beauty and the Beast was a HUGE flop here, and they were sued for not making repairs to the damage threy inflicted at The Chicago Theatre.

Ugh! Disney!
(Martha Graham from a letter to Agnes de Mille) "There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening That is translated through you into action, And because there is only one of you in all time, This expression is unique. If you block it, It will never exist through any other medium And be lost. The world will never have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, Nor how valuable it is, Nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours, clearly and directly, To keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware Directly to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. No artist is pleased. There is no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction, A blessed unrest that keeps us marching And makes us more alive than others."

The words "sit-down" and "Urinetown" paint a very vivid picture in my mind.
Personally, I stand up.

"Why did Beauty & the Beast flop?"
Disney waited until WELL after The Lion King opened on Broadway before Beauty and the Beast even had its Chicago premier. As such, Chicagoans wanted to see The Lion King, not a show that opened several seasons prior. Initially, Disney was going to buy the Chicago Theatre, but they weren't able to acquire the building behind it (they wanted to expand the stage), and since Beauty and the Beast was dragging in people off the street (literally, they were giving free tickets to people walking by), Disney passed and ever since refuses to bring long run shows.

"Michael Accardo as Caldwell B. Cladwell" - This man is dynamite. I got to hear him sing "Don't be the Bunny" the other night, and he's amazing.:)
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I am coming to Chicago the weekend of March the 24th and was hoping "Spelling Bee" would be playing. As luck would have it, it doesn't start until March 28th, so I was very glad to hear that "Urinetown" would be playing when I'm there. Caught the show on tour a few years a ago and loved it. Can't wait to see it again, especially in such an intimate setting.

I am SOOOO excited to see URINETOWN. It's one of the best musicals ever written. The Mercury Theater is perfect for this kind of show.
The cast looks AMAZING! Some of the best Equity and non-Equity talent in the city! (And about half the price of a ticket to see Wicked!!)

The Mercury is a very cute theatre. Urinetown should do well there.
