These are scanned from the Chicago Tribune. I don't care for Barfee's new look :-p.
Enjoy!
Here's the video clip: http://cbs2chicago.com/video
watch the "Inside Chicago: A Spelling Bee Champ Before Spelling Was Cool" one. It's only a few seconds from the show, but it's better than nothing.

They all look like they're made out of clay. Weird.

Barfee looks like Dwight from the Office!
I wish there were more pictures out there from the SF production. It's really fantastic.

They all look so much younger than the Broadway cast.
And I agree with the dislike of Barfee's new look.

Posted: 4/8/06 at 12:24amIt does look sorta cheaper than the Broadway production. Probably cause I'm so use to seeing the NYC production photos.

Posted: 4/8/06 at 3:45amLeaf does look cute, but I'm not too keen on the rest. I have to agree with it looking kind of cheap...

Well, it's hard to say the show looks cheap just by the costumes. Wait till we get pictures of the set and THEN maybe we can say that...
Anyway, let's not put down the "new look". As illustrated by the reimaging of the Jose Llana character, they obviously aren't trying to just do a Xerox of the Broadway production, and that's probably a good thing.

Posted: 4/8/06 at 10:49amI don't like these costumes. Especially Barfee's. They didn't change Marcy and Lagainnes too much so thats good.

Posted: 4/8/06 at 1:38pmIt does look like second-rate community theatre...

I'm not sure why you think the pictures look cheap. As I posted in another thread, this production was fantastic. It looked just like the NY productions, and the actors were all spot on, virtual duplications of the original Broadway cast. Only Barfee had a significantly different look.

Seriously? You are judging the quality of a production by a scanned picture from a newspaper?

Derrick Trumbly (Leaf) is completely adorable...:)
The show does NOT look cheap or anything when you actually see it.
Meanwhile, the cast is all MUCH more attractive than they look in those pics.

I saw the show yesterday (through the lotto) and I LOVED it. There were about 40-ish people at the lotto, so it wasn't that crowded compared to the nyc one. I'll just write random comments on each of the actors.
BILL LARKIN: He was an awesome Panch. He delivered all the sentences and definitions perfectly. His little breakdown was great too.
CRISTEN PAIGE: What a cute Olive! However, at times she did look a little old (not as youthful as Celia)...but she played and sung the role of Olive perfectly. Her "The I Love You Song" was truly heartbreaking.
LUCIA SPINA: She was one of my favorite parts of the show, even if she stole my card that Marcy Parks (Jen Sese) gave me during Pandemonium
. Her acting was dead on, and she sung the role almost exactly like her broadway counterpart.
DERRICK TRUMBLY: Played the role of Leaf Coneybear perfectly. His "I'm Not That Smart" was hilarious. His little mannerisms were great. And his transitions from Leaf to Logainne's dad were perfect.
BRAD WEINSTOCK: The best part of the show. I can see why the producers really wanted him as Chip. He was sooo cute (like you wanted to pinch his cheeks). His "M.U.E" was a big highlight.
ERIC ROEDIGER: Eric sounded A LOT like Dan Fogler. If I closed my eyes, I would think I was listening to the obcr. He was a great Barfee, except I still don't like the new look they gave him.
JEN SESE: Nothing too much to say about her Marcy Parks. But she was great. She was surprisingly heartbreaking when she said how she can't cry and ect.
CHRISTINE WERNY: Such a cute Logainne. She sounded a lot like Sarah though, but that's not a bad thing.
JAMES EARL JONES II: What a great actor. His transition from Logainne's dad to Mitch was so drastic and perfect. They also changed his look too. He now wears more of a thug outfit. He has a blue t-shirt, a denim jacket, an awesome belt buckle that says "MITCH", baggy jeans, and boots.
If you have ANY questions, just ask...since I'm not the best reviewer.
