Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Predictions

Lol. I've seen some production pics from the London show, and It looks exactly like the movie. So I guess whether it is "good" or not depends on your opinion of the movie. I, personally, watched the movie when I was little, and will probably see it for the sake of nostalgia. It'll probably do great with the family crowds, especially since the Disney shows have been around for a while and it's something new for them to go see. Just my 2 cents.

I think it will do very well, good or bad reviews. Its a show similar to The Wizard of Oz. Alot of adults know the movie, as do children. It has good music and good effects. It may be the Wicked of next season

Matt G, I'm assuming you mean ol' Kudisch? That show ends it run in December before Chitty even starts rehearsals so I'm sure the man will be the car show. Sad, though. I love Kudisch. But hate that friggin' song from the movie.

One more thing: shows with children are always bad bets. I'm sure this show will be great and heck I'll be there opening weekend probably. But "actor kids".... yeesh. Always make my skin crawl.

I saw the show in london.
The cast was incredible (the original one), the songs are great, the staging of the show just perfect, and the end of act one... amazing!

I enjoyed a lot the show, and the movie wasn't one of my favourites never... so if it's as good than in london, I expect a big success

I just can't imagine it being a huge seller. Does Broadway have a need for a musical to "take the kids to"? All I can think about is recent shows that were family friendly like Frog and Toad, Suessical, and Charlie Brown. Are parents willing to spend thay kind of money on the kiddies? If not, if Mom and Dad choose to have a romantic evening with dinner and tickets to the theatre would they choose Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? It just seems to me that the audience that this show (might) appeal to would be more interested in seeing something more familiar from their generation like Lion King.

The difference between "Chitty..." and shows like "Frog and Toad", "Charlie Brown" (which, I'm guessing you mean "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown") and "Seussical" is that "Chitty..." is using the old material from the movie with new things thrown in there. People know going in, what they're going to see-- and they know there will be a flying car...

With shows like the three you mentioned-- they were taken from ideas popular with children, but were just used as the foundation to create a musical. The people who saw "Chitty..." (or even ACE VENTURA) remember the title song, and TOOT SWEETS, HUSHABYE MOUNTAIN and such songs like that. "Seussical", "...Charlie Brown", and "F&T" had very little material that people KNEW they were going to see (exceptions of the initial chracters and some of the story).

The car malfunctioned a few times in London (including getting stuck over the audience once or twice) but that didn't cause any major problems. There was a couple of times where they had to close the show for technical reasons, but given the technology involved it ran surprisingly smoothly.

The London version was superb - there were audible gasps when the car flew - from the adults as well as the children. The new songs were great (especially TEAMWORK, which has been dubbed the "Les Mis moment" of the show) and the script, whilst slightly different to the movie, is very funny. The show is played out more as real-life events where as in the books and film it is clearly a story told by Caractacus to the children. The Childcatcher, if well-cast (my fave was Richard O'Brien), is truly terrifying; though Truly's role is a bit under-developed for my liking. I preferred Michael Ball's Caractacus to DVD's as he portrayed Caractacus as a family-man first, with less emphasis on the inventor side. There is more of a relationship between the family and Grandpa Potts as well - in the film I always felt he seems a little neglected and I feel very sorry for him. Caractacus and Grandpa seem a lot closer in the show.

I think it could be a big hit, but it does need to be well-cast to work.

Which cast did you see Ryan? Like I said, the cast makes that show for me (the music isn't exactly Sondheim, but what else do you expect for that show?! And I bet you remember the title song). I was not so keen on it after Richard O'Brien left and hated it after Nichola McAuliffe and Brian Blessed finished their runs.

I actually think it'll run for at least a couple of years. I happen to know a lot of US audiences are buying tickets for the show in London, it's a pretty big seller from this side of the pond - adults seeing it for themselves, parents and grandparents taking it for their kids. So I'm sure when they have the chance to see in on Broadway, it'll sell well.
