1. Steve Sondheim- seriously, THE greatest living theater composer...the mans work is so thrilling and i love his shows and worship the ground he walks.
2. JRB- lyrical genuis and the reality of his shows and the layers in his music makes you love his stuff! It's incredibly and I'm DYING for his next show!
3. MJL- sorry...i know he's not everyones favorite but i really love his score and how goes there and when you watch his peices the music soars. I think his stuff is harder to appreciate on recording but the power of something like Marie Christine is undeniable!
The first three to come to mind (and not necessarily in this order) are:
Jerome Kern
George Gershwin
Cole Porter
Richard Rogers and ALW will elbow their way into that group at any point in time.

Honorable mention goes to Jonathan Larson, unfortunately not enough of his work exists for me to really decide if he is a favorite or not.
And how JRB isn't on every single person's list blows my mind. I think he is so bloody brilliant.
