Choosing just three is very difficult:
Sondheim
Loesser
Rodgers
When they have more work under their collective belts, Brown and Guettel may well replace the second two. No one is taking Sondheim off that list.
I almost couldn't bear to choose!
Well, my absolute number 1 is Sondheim.
I listen to Adam Guettel's three CDs a LOT. I mean, a lot a lot. I don't know if he deserves a place as one of my favorite composers until he's had more work under his belt, but in spirit he occupies a "my favorite" place in my heart.
Eric Idle... no, completely jay kay... I dunno, I can't pick a third. I'm not good at ranking things. I guess Sondheim is my favorite composer, and then there are maybe five people who are at the top for various reasons on various days.

theatre queen -- EXCELLENT POINT about billy joel. he's most definitely one of my favorite composers.
and ihearttheatre -- 6 way tie? really? come on, don't you think that's a little excessive :-P
At least the six way tie was due to excellent taste.
There is no way to choose three. I have a long list.
