Clyde's or Flying Over Sunset?

I will be in the city this weekend, and was thinking of catching one of these productions before they close. Yes, they're extremely different, but if you've seen both, which is more worth it? Are either of them worth the time and money?

“flying over sunset”! I feel like it needs to be seen on this stage with the grandiose set and design. And the leads are on fire this week. “clyde’s” is great as well, but I feel like you’ll see it pop up a lot regionally.

CLYDE'S is a great American play that is also being webcast, so maybe there's a chance you can watch it online and not in the theatre. There will probably also be really solid regional productions of it.

FlYING OVER SUNSET is a messy American musical that doesn't fully work, but I doubt you'll ever have a chance to see a large scale production of it with a cast this good.

So I guess FLYING gets the edge for the sense of history? But you'll probably have a better time at CLYDE'S.

Telling someone to see Flying Over Sunset just seems mean spirited. It's not going to be a musical that is remembered at all. You're not going to look back and think "wow, I was one of the few that saw FOS." It's really bad and barely qualifies as a musical.

I didn't love Clyde's but it's far superior to that other trash.

I've seen both. As much as the softest part of my heart wants to say Flying, I think the answer is Clyde's. It's just superior, period. Flying has lots of individual parts that recommend it - great performances by great performers, beautiful sets and design, a uniqueness factor that is pretty much unmatched. But the whole is much less than the sum of its parts. Clyde's however, is tight, funny, smart, extremely well acted and it's not just a throwaway comedy, it's very moving and carries more weight than may seem at first glance. Plus I think it will one day be an impressive dinner party talking point to have seen Kara Young at this stage of her career, I think she's going to be major.

I'm a musical lover, obsessed with Carmen Cusack and aware of the importance of Lapine - and I would recommend Clyde's.

Saw both of them. Loved both of them. And even though Clyde’s IS streaming I’d still say go with Clyde’s. Just be sure to eat something beforehand!!

If you are interested in seeing both of them at some point, I would say see Sunset now, because there is a much, much greater chance that Clyde's will be produced regionally much more frequently. But really, it's all about which show you're more in the mood for.

I see you've picked already, but throwing my vote in for FOS anyway! It needed a lot of work, but there are some gorgeous elements and great performances. Clyde's was pretty good, but didn't stick with me much after leaving the theater.

I'll push Flying Over Sunset, because its staging alone warrants the full immersion experience. Love the show or hate it, the staging is one of the best uses of the Beaumont since LTC opened, both operatic and in moments, sublimely intimate; all current visual resources available used to majestic effect. If you don't like the piece you'll still be left with a distinctive theatrical impression. And the music is rapturously orchestrated by Starobin.
