The coming season was just announced for Buffalo shows. With the exception of Jersey Boys, it is one of the worst seasons possible. The badly reviewed tour of Fiddler is part of it as are Grease and a return of Chicago. There is a Cirque wannabe for Christmas. All in all, it is a season I won't be getting tickets for. With the good touring shows available, we are getting short changed - just my opinion so I'm prepared to have others tell me I'm crazy.
What is the season? Is there a link?
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
When I saw the shows, I had similar thoughts. I believe Jersey Boys (which I saw in Rochester last night) and In The Heights are the only two real highlights.

There is no link, the season was announced on TV last night and in today's (March 13) Buffalo News.

I think that last years season was the best with WICKED and AVENUE Q..., we were lucky. This year we were lucky to be one of the first stops for LEGALLY BLONDE. But next years season is seriously disgusting, IN THE HEIGHTS AND JERSEY BOYS are the only two shows I am excited for. There were so many great shows out there, its a shame that we couldnt get better ones, IMHO.
It is also on the Shea's website with princing info, etc now... http://www.sheas.org/
Yup, returning home for Heights!
In the Heights
Fiddler on the Roof
Jersey Boys
Chicago
Grease
I'd hardly call that a horrible season.
That is NOT a bad season. This is our current season. All one night stands.

I envy those people complaining about Spamalot coming to Boston 3 times.
The only one I plan on skipping is Fiddler.
I am dragging my whole family to In the Heights!!

"Oh please, Over at 'Gypsy' Patti LuPone hasn't even alienated her first daughter yet!" Mary Testa in "Xanadu" "...Like a drunk Chita Rivera!" Robin de Jesus in "In the Heights"
"B*tch, I don't know your life." -Xanadu After that if he still doesn't understand why you were uncomfortable and are now infuriated, kick him again but this time with Jazz Hands!!! -KillerTofuBroadway Legend Joined: 2/15/05
I hate when things like the Cirque shows or "Rain" are considered theater. They're like cheap theme park shows, not legit theater.

Any news on shows that won't be included in the 6 show season package?
Anybody going to Mandy & Patti's conert in May? ( she says w green tinged envy)

Doesn't look like a bad season to me. What are the 'good touring shows available' that aren't coming to Buffalo?

Shows not coming include Mary Popping, South Pacific, White Christmas among others. "Christmas" would be a much better than the "Cirque" knock off.

Seems like a sense of entitlement. I would be MORE than happy to have Buffalo's season.
I thought THIS season was the worst season in MANY YEARS for Buffalo...and next years is only marginally better, with IN THE HEIGHTS, and - FINALLY! - JERSEY BOYS (which every other city around here has had already).
The schedule might not look bad on the surface to an outsider, but long time season ticket holders aren't ready to pay for 2nd and 3rd visits of FIDDLER, CHICAGO, and GREASE - all just here in the past few years!
Where the hell is Mary Poppins and South Pacific???? Pop them in place of Chicago and Grease and we got a helluva season!

Has South Pacific even started yet? Even booking cities yet? I thought the only announced stop was the Fox in Atlanta in April 2010. Isn't that where it's starting?
It's possible that Mary Poppins wasn't available for next season to cities as small as Buffalo. It's probably too pricey, too, at least initially.
Those two shows haven't even booked Toronto, which would be more likely to get them before Buffalo.

Toronto doesn't always get shows before Buffalo. Ave Q played here months before Toronto.
Buffalo has a very strong season for native Buffalonians who do not travel for theatre. Staunch theatre-goers who travel alot for theatre may be disappointed, but they aren't the target audience. I mean, those people will always be ahead of the curve and can be disappointed by every season.
Shea's has had a huge increase in subscribers who were introduced to Shea's by WICKED. I think it fine to bring back Chicago and Grease, which are brisk-selling crowd pleasers.
Also, there are alot of Topol fans, believe it or not, and I know several folks (many older) who are elated.
I will admit to despising those Cirque shows, which feel like filler. I'd take a play over that stuff, but you can't win them all.
In the past, Shea's Buffalo would not have gotten Jersey Boys or In The Heights, prior to it's renovations. I remember the days when a Shea's season was REALLY disappointing, like when I was a teen.
Sheas has done amazing work in keeping live theatre an attraction in Buffalo.
The point still stands....
Chicago, Grease, and Fiddler have ll been here since many of the real local theater fans have had seasons tickets.
Nobody who has had tickets all along wants to pay to see these 3 shows again this soon. And Cirque is a joke.
The renovations were finished years ago toi bring in Phantom.
It appears Sheas is more interested in getting new subscribers than keeping its current ones?
Like it or Hate it, this season only has Jersey Boys and In the Heights going for it, and those shows can be purchased separately the week before you want to see them.

BettyBoy said it pretty well. Majority of the subscribers WANT to see these shows again, which is why they don't hesitate on repeating them. It is us "staunch theatre-goers" who are disappointed.
Shea's has no problem keeping subscribers and getting new subscribers.
Unfortunately, with the economy as it is people want to see shows they know. They aren't going to spend money on shows they don't know. Which is why, I think, In The Heights is going to be the hardest show to sell. When I also think it's the best show in the whole package.
I'd be somewhat excited for IN THE HEIGHTS and JERSEY BOYS, except I'm seeing them both this weekend in New York.
The best season in recent years was by far the 2007-2008 season:
Camelot
White Christmas
Spelling Bee
Drowsy Chaperone
Avenue Q
Wicked
