I think BettyBoy works for Shea's as that post says almost exactly theresponse I got from Shea's when I emailed them about the terrible season. PROPAGANDA REIGNS SUPREME at Shea's.

In response to erinrebecca.. Buffalo really isn't a 'small' city, especially when talking about touring shows. I mean we're not talking about Elmira or York PA or Peduka, Kentucky here. In fact Shea's reputation has helped it land the first few runs of several big roductions (LEGALLY BLONDE, the RENT farewell tour, and now IN THE HEIGHTS).
With that said, I'll admit that the upcoming season does little to excite me, outside JERSEY BOYS (finally) and ITH. And even casual theatregoers aren't that stupid. I think many will think to themselves, "Grease? Chicago? Again? It was just here a few years ago." But I think it's just one of those seasons when we've been spoiled by a few very good and big-named touring shows of recent seasons past. I agree that '07-'08 with AVENUE Q and WICKED was the best we've seen here in years. I'm holding out for some decent 'special engagements.'
For the record, I do not work for Shea's. If someone read my profile, they would see I am a social worker. I am, however, a realist and try to understand circumstances without being irrational.
Let's think about this, shall we. Shea's offers an incredible bargain to their season patrons. A top-priced subscription package would barely get you into two full price shows in NYC. If you hate the season, buy the package, go see Jersey Boys and In The Heights, give the "disapointing shows" as gifts and consider it a bargain. To bring in "high profile expensive" shows like Jersey Boys and In The Heights, I would imagine concessions have to made elsewhere by bringing in less expensive shows. It just happens that those other shows are immensely popular.
Plus, as BDWY24 stated, things we theatre lovers consider "hits" like Avenue Q and In The Heights are huge risks for touring houses.
I think people need to think about both sides before getting all emotional and accusing people of "working for Shea's" and that PROPAGANDA REIGNS SUPREME.
jejr, when you run a hugely successful touring house in a ecomonically depressed city, get back to me. Also, if you want to send me accusatory PMs then please have yours turned on so I can respond.
BTW, it is a new production of Grease, with added songs from the film. I am happy to see it. I like Grease. Chicago is an amazing dance show and each new tour brings new interpretations. Like I said, if you dont like, dont go or give the tickets away.
Don't take Shea's Season so personally. They didn't do it to spite anyone.

Unfortunately, casual theatre goers are very excited about next season. At last nights opening of Wizard of Oz when next season was announced from the stage Grease and Chicago had the biggest reactions out of the entire season.....
Let's see what Rochester has in store, they announce their seaason tomorrow.

WIZARD OF OZ got panned in the paper today. One and a half stars. Ouch.
BTW.. I didn't know one of the aspiring Elle's from the MTV Reality Show played Dorothy. Good for her.
HAHA!
Who didn't see that coming?

We gave up one pair of seasons tickets this year because we hated the season.
We're giving up the other two tickets for next season.
That's 4 Center Orchestras up for grabs to the "Casual Theater Goers"!
(Though I'm not so sure a "Casual Theater Goer" would spend the
$1400 on tickets we did for Seasons Tickets every year for the past 10 years??)
In these "economically depressed" times, I vote with MY money too!
On with the Shows!
Rochester has a few of the same shows and a couple others...
The Color Purple
Chicago
Cirque Dreams Holidaze
Spring Awakening
Grease

zamedy, I'm well aware of the size of Buffalo. I grew up in Toronto and have family in Buffalo. My point about the size was only in reference to the other cities that had already booked Mary Poppins. Compared to those, Buffalo is a small city and their ticket prices are lower for most shows.
Didn't Rochester just get Wicked this past season? I emailed our tour contact person about Binghamton's next season.
Rochester did have Wicked last May into June. It is returning less than 2 years later - coming April 13 (2010) for another 3 weeks. It set all theater records for Rochester last year, selling over 60,000 tickets and selling out 22 of the 24 shows. It is no surprise that they would want it again. I sell group tickets and I have already had customers that went previously request tickets for next year.

Excited for Rochester that next year brings Color Purple (finally) and Spring Awakening, with both being 1st National Tours. Soooo wishing In The Heights was coming here right after Buffalo!!!!! Why God Why???
I am surprised they put in the cirque holiday show as part of the subscription season. My guess is that that is the only way they could justify bringing it in at all. I didn't hear many good things about the Jungle Fantasy production from last year.
Interested in seeing the Grease tour but not expecting much. It is Grease after all.
Anyone know what the Chicago tour is like these days? Equity or non-equity? It scares me to think of how long this show has been on the road. If it is anything like the non-eq Drowsey tour or impending arrival of Wizard of Oz, I will run (away) screaming.
Wicked coming back is a good thing for Rochester, economically speaking. I can't say that I am going to pay to see it again or bring groups of people as I did last time, but I'll certainly see if for free (volunteer usher).
I hope next year brings Mary Poppins, South Pacific, In The Heights and NOT Dirty Dancing, Hairspray, Chicago, etc.
