This is like national treasure...except we know where the treasure is.

Jordan C, have you been to his house? which show did you watch? I just read some AWESOME articles about the man. I want to visit this house.

Wait, we're freaking out over 20 seconds from each song? That's it?

CATS, 20 seconds from each song filmed live on stage that shows the original staging, costumes, sets, choreography etc.

Yes, that's worth freaking out over. And in many cases it's more than 20 seconds.

I just love the feeling of entitlement absolute blinking nobodies think they have to this material just because in their desperation they need to see/own it. Pure delusion.

I can't believe I've never heard of any of this. I would actually tend to agree with TheEnchantedHunter, we don't have any particular "right" to any of it. That said...it would certainly be nice!

Someone must have hacked TheEnchantedHunter's account, as I think his posts are only official when he signs them.

I don't think anyone feels a personal right to any of these, but, as Broadway122 says, they're basically public treatures. Sure, there are plenty of Impressionist paintings owned by people, but one could argue that these people in essence hold them in trust and have no moral right to deface them because their value is immeasurable to the public. I'm glad to hear that the Broadway tapes seem to be stored better than they were before, and hopefully they will someday be archived properly.

I've always wanted the soundboard from the original cast of Gypsy, but haven't gotten it, anybody willing to share? :)

Requesting recordings on this thread is a surefire way to get it deleted and I'd really like to see this discussion about how artists choose to preserve their work stick around for a bit.

I don't think it's about entitlement, I think it's more about incredulity that people would rather sit on something just because they can, as opposed to sharing them.

Several years back I met a guy who who had these Liz Phair bootlegs I was dying to hear. He allowed me to come over and hear them, although we inexplicably had to listen to them in his car. All I wanted was for him to make me a few copies, even if they were just on audio. And he was such a dick, talking about about how the hardcore fans don't just let this stuff go freely. And I was like, you are an assh*le. A few years later I found the recordings on ebay. Suck it, whatever your name was!

In the past few years I have been flabbergasted at the amount of "collectable" material can be found from shows 30, 40, even 50 years older and more. The internet has really opened things up, which I think pisses off a lot of (usally older) folks off, because suddenly they're no longer cool because of their audience recording of Merman in Gypsy or whatever. It just seems so petty to deny other people that pleasure, especially when it's still a relatively small group who even gives a frack about this stuff.

Mind you, that above rant was about Miles Krueger. It was just sort of an in general comment, mostly about the "nobodies" that TheEnchantedHunter mentioned.

What's old got to do with it? I may be old but I put my Follies stuff out there.

At first I thought I'd be arrested or something, but someone sent it to Sondheim and apparently he was tickled to see it.

Well, I don't really think of you as old, and I wasn't talking about you. I more or less saying that younger folks (and I'm talking younger than me as well) have a much different attitude about the transmission of this sort of information.
