" He won because his fans spent a lot of time in front of a computer voting, probably multiple times."
Yeah, basically that's how it works in any on line or phone - in contest. The fans vote. Probably multiple times.

I'm not sure why BWW would promote a contest on a competing site. If you ever check out bway.com, you probably would have known about the poll, and if you don't, well, then I should be meaningless to you.
Can't really understand any reaction besides happy or indifferent. Unless you personally voted for Ripley 900 times and she still lost. That would suck (and I wouldn't put it past some people).
I visit broadway.com very often and I was unaware of the contest.
And I'm sorry, but Constantine is certainly not an "amazingly talented performer." Yes, he has a great rock voice, but the guy can't act his way out of a paper bag. I saw him in the RENT tour years ago as well as ROA On and Off Broadway and I think his capabilities as an actor are very limited.
And just because someone has a Tony nomination does not mean they are extremely talented. I mean...look at Idina Menzel! That train wreck of an actress WON a Tony Award. Marissa Jaret Winokur beat out Bernadette Peters for a Tony. Tony awards and nominations don't always mean that the recipient of them is deserving.
In my opinion, Constantine "stole" the Tony nomination from James Barbour who was FAR MORE deserving of it.
I've also witnessed first hand how full of himself Constantine is...on many occasions. He's kind of a scum-bag.
But, like everyone else has said...broadway.com is often a joke.
"I've also witnessed first hand how full of himself Constantine is...on many occasions. He's kind of a scum-bag."
Really? Because I constantly witness the exact opposite.
Well...I don't know him personally and everyone acts different around different groups of people.
I'm not bashing anyone for thinking highly of him as a person. There are several performers who I know are unpleasant, but have fans that find them delightful. I'm sure there are performers I love who others find to be full of themselves.
Just my opinion from the situations I've been in.

Praise him, Phyllis. Praise him.
Pathetic. It should have gone to Alice Ripley or Angela Lansbury.

It's their fans that are pathetic, then, not the actresses. Their fans should have voted.
^ Agreed.
Of course it's not the actresses. I know that a lot of Alice's fans did vote, but I guess Constantine has even more rabid fans. I bet some of the people who voted don't even know who Angela Lansbury is.
^ Probably true.

Angela Lansbury is a stage and screen legend who joined the revival of Blithe Spirit in 2009 for a few weeks. This does not make her Broadway star of the year 2009. I do love her though.
Was avoiding her Tony for Blithe & being currently in 'Night Music...' Intentional?
"Angela Lansbury is a stage and screen legend who joined the revival of Blithe Spirit in 2009 for a few weeks."
Ummm...what? She didn't join the show for a few weeks. She opened the show.
Ummm. Lansbury returning to a musical (a SONDHEIM musical) is a pretty big story this year.
A few weeks? It ran for four months and she didn't miss any shows. Alice got my vote, but whatever. No biggie.
I love Angela Lansbury. She's incomparable. Her performance as the mother in The Manchurian Candidate will forever send chills down my spine.
That doesn't mean that CM, or anyone else in this poll for that matter, should be dissed.

A decent arguement could be made for just about anyone that was nominated. I personally think Gavin Creel both starring in the Tony-winning revival of HAIR and founding/leading BroadwayImpact makes him a very worthy candidate. However, Constantine won because he had the most support so congrats to him.
However, I must say that if one looked at Broadway.com one would think Constantine had died or something lol. I mean, Good God, thats WAY too many features for anybody.

I agree with those who say that the fans should have voted for their favorites, like CM's did.
Also, that he seems to be a very nice person, and I like the fact that he is close to his family. But, he has also demonstrated to be very good for Broadway...he's done charities, he's been involved in many Bway activities, and let's face it, he has a great voice, persona, and I agree that he has helped turn ROA into the hit it is today.
There's many great legends out there on the Broadway stages nowdays, but there is a time for everyone, including CM. And he happens to be on right now. Can we be a bit happy for him
I saw him in the RENT tour a few years back and he was a HORRID Roger. During the intermission, the theatre was a buzz about how awful he was. That ruined any love to come from me for this guy. Granted, he might have gotten better since then but EW!
I love Constantine but I think it really should have gone to Gavin.
