Posted: 5/3/11 at 11:00amNick Adams most definitely should not have been nominated. I don't think Tony Sheldon should've been either. I didn't enjoy any of the performances, nor did I enjoy the show which was a ridiculous cartoon.

Posted: 5/3/11 at 11:03amI agree about Nick Adams. I really didn't care for his performance. Sheldon was the best thing on that stage.

They should have nominated him just because he's British!!!!!!
Oh wait, that's the Oscars that does that. Never mind. Back to the regularly scheduled chatting.

I don't think this is the biggest injustice ever. He worked his butt off for sure, and after both this and Equus he's certainly proven he has stage presence. But I found the performance decent, no better. It's nothing close to Matthew Broderick's turn in the 95 revival, which doubtless most of the nominating committee remembers.
Like most people, I'm glad Radcliffe is doing theater -- he clearly loves it, and that's his only motivation (he could be doing anything else), and that distinguishes him somewhat from other celebs who drop into town for a stint.

Posted: 5/3/11 at 11:44amRyan, I agree. I would pay to see him again in another show. It is so obvious that he loves Broadway and unlike other movie stars, he is very active in the community and that is really nice to see.

Posted: 5/3/11 at 12:22pmUnfortunately for Mr. Radcliffe, these are the Tony Awards, not the Special Olympics, and you don't get an award for "Trying Hard".

Posted: 5/3/11 at 12:26pmMichael Bennett I agree that he gives a good college try, but what confuses me on the H2$ noms is that they nominated the weakest link. So, what message are they sending? I feel like it would make more sense to not nominate them at all.

Well Hunter and Cuddles can only do but so much.
Occasionally a Hollywood star will slip in. But let's just be glad that their campaign achieved shutting out Radcliffe, Robin Williams, Chris Rock, and the entire Championship Season cast.

From everything I've seen in the promo clips, Radcliffe's performance was ruthlessly undermined by the terrible choreography and direction. He seems able to do a great job as Finch, if he weren't so busy flip-flopping and sliding around the stage, out of breath, trying just to get through it all with a grin on his face. It's nothing short of sabotage, and it's painful to watch.
So who get's nominated? The director and choreographer ... and not Radcliffe.
Really embarrassing outcome.

I am disappointed. The nominations this year are so wrapped around names and politics, it saddens me. Award season, is my favorite time of the year. It falls around my birthday and I get to celebrate many of my peers.
I am sorry, but I felt as if Radcliffe would have at least be nominated. I also was hoping for a split nomination for book of mormon (featured and leading man). I enjoyed them both and would love to see them both take home the award. But I fear, as we have seen in the past, they may now cancel each other out.
Just my .02

Radcliffe is and always has been the epitome of class. I suspect he'll still appear on the telecast, probably as both a presenter and performer.
He seems like he has enough of a sense of humor that he'd do a bit similar to the one Chenoweth and Nathan Lane did last year (which was the most entertaining part of last year's fiasco of a telecast).

It really is obscene. I also thought he was the frontrunner. Certainly on Broadway right now there is no actor giving more to their show than he is. Plus keep in mind that Matthew Broderick walked away with the nomination AND the win for a less impressive take on this same role that was also less well received (I think "wan" was the most popular description). And for detractors, I am not a particular Radcliffe fan, but this was not "a college try" but a slam-bang. He was the strongest link in the revival and easily the best thing about it.
I am not remotely impressed by the Mormon guys - in particular I have not understood all of the love for Rannells and I found Gad rather annoying. I would love to have seen either Aaron Tveit or the charming Colin Donnell sneak into a slot, but alas if Radcliffe couldn't do it, neither could they. I have not seen Priscilla so cannot speak on Sheldon. I did have a sneaking suspicion that Tony voters would try to make amends for their movie celebrity heavy roster from last year (Zeta-Jones, anyone?), but I thought that would take place in who won rather than who got nominated. I see they have also taken it to who gets nominated. A shame Radcliffe was not a year earlier or else he may have had this in the bag.

ADAMGREER--I agree 100% with what you said. RADCLIFFE is a class act all the way, and I hope he Hosts the TONY's and shows everyone what a real talent he is.

Posted: 5/3/11 at 1:28pmTo be honest, it will be better for Radcliffe to win a Tony in a new show rather than a revival. He's young and he's got years and years to win his prize.

Has anyone considered the possibility that Radcliffe didn't receive a nomination not because he's a film star, but because the nominating committee just didn't like him?
Or is that too obvious?

Maybe next time he should revive PIPPIN and actually burn himself to death each night to get the nominator's attention.
I thought he was a shoo-in for sure.
And why do people always bring up the "he doesn't care he's got so much money" cliche?

Posted: 5/3/11 at 6:02pmI'm not sure if that comment was referring to me, but I was not implying that he didn't care -- I'm sure he's aware of the significance of the oversight or whatever you want to call it. What I was implying was that some of his competitors (including the nominated ones) will in some cases be unknowns (except for theatre geeks like all of us)in a relatively short period of time, no matter who wins. Ask any non-geek who won the Tony for Best Anything in 2009 and you'll probably encounter a lot of blank stares.

But what does that have to do with whether or not he should or shouldn't have been nominated for the award, Ed?
I don't get the connection.
It's just as absurd as nominating someone simply because they are a film star.
