DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

Now in performances at Playwrights Horizons through October 11th. I quite enjoyed this and haven't seen anyone talking about it -- curious to hear the general reception!

Run time is 2 hours 45 minutes, including a 15 minute intermission.

Really enjoyed this. Else Went has a nack for taking plot lines that could border on melodrama and makes them feel very real and lived in and emotional. I felt similarly about Initiative. It’s reflecting a real undercurrent that is affecting so many young men and women these days, and treating it with respect and reverence and weight.

the entire (very short) run of this is sold out ... i assume news of an extension is imminent?

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

I thought this was mostly exceptional. It took me a bit to get into (although that opening sequence is more terrifying than anything in PARANORMAL ACTIVITY), but once the plot really got going, I was all in.

Christopher Dylan White is giving a stunner of a performance, matched by an equally memorable Zachary Desmond. A couple of walkouts around me, but that's their loss.

Flaws and all, I highly recommend rushing to grab a ticket to the final extension.

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

The two main actors in this pieces are the reason to see it. Primarily Christopher Dylan White. He's the win here.

The piece itself is ... okay. It's lack of subtley in being preachy via dialogue felt amateur to me. Or the dialogue with questions that the author wants to answer are done via the characters conversations in obvious form.

The directing is average if not collegiate too. The opening scene in the dark is text book college. Seems cooler in idea than practice.

Thought the acting was great here but the piece and direction overrated. Felt like a lucky first draft to make the stage.

It’s definitely more of a queer take on degenerates. I enjoyed it overall but didn’t necessarily love it. And the bullets in the chicken nuggets was a little too abstract and random for me.

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

My understanding was that they were the BBs he himself had previously joked about shooting at the chickens - and the meaning I took away was as follows: he accused his mother of trying to kill him, when in fact the BBs were the direct consequences of his own actions -- and that this may be how he looks at life, blaming others for the results of what he himself does.

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

Oh wow that actually escaped me. I pondered this for so long, forgetting about him shooting the chickens. I was thinking he was imagining his mother trying to kill him and blaming her for his problems. Or perhaps a commentary about parents being complicit in their children’s degenerative state.

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

I really liked this play, it really speaks to today, but it’s not necessarily a must see. I’m surprised it’s so popular that they keep extending. Meanwhile their other show, the ripple, is not that far behind in quality and it’s being papered

Re: DEGENERATES at Playwrights Horizons

It's really not all that popular. Playwrights had a hole in that theater space - and HOLE! was already selling tickets in the smaller. At the end of the day, they will probably wish they had put HOLE! in the main space to begin with and kept running Degenerates in the small as it fizzes and HOLE gains steam.
