"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Blech...Really, I enjoyed Spamalot (more than I enjoyed Wicked last season) but come on! I hope any of the other nominees walk away w/ the Tony. Same goes for Doubt. I wasn't THAT impressed. I'm much rather see The Pillowman win (didn't see Gem).
But when did New Hampshire become--Such a backward wasteland of seatbelt hating crazies?...I mean, only 40 people actually live there. The others are just visitors who come for the tax-free liquor and three inches of novelty coastline. John Hodgeman on The Daily Show (1-30-07)
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell
plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!
So a show that doesn't have the best director, best music, or best book is the BEST MUSICAL? Um, OK. Whatever......

Let us just remember that WICKED won the majority here and that it only won 3 tony's... Donna Murphy won the Drama Desk I believe...so things can very well change. Tony voters need not have their final ballots the the accounting firm until 50 hrs before the Tony telecast! Thats a big deal, a lot can happen in the next two very telling weeks.
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS, DOUBT, 12 ANGRY MEN, & LA CAGE AUX FOLLES - ALL THE WAY BABY! ALL 4 of you DESERVE THE TOP AWARDS!!!
I think it's also funny that not only did Spamalot not win Director, Book, or Music, but it was also shut out of the acting awards, and let's face it, w/o the star casting this show wouldn't be as popular as it is. It, like The Producers, is a star driven show (but hell, at least they acknowledged it w/ The Producers, in a way, w/ wins for the actors)...Does that make any sense???

I enjoyed it. I had fun (twice!), but I just don't think it's deserving of Best Musical.
