re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

We already said it WASN'T so. Read the AICN article.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

AICN has balls the size of watermelons to be impugning another website's accuracy. Remember when Ain't It Cool leaked the Oscar Nominations...only they were, um, wrong?

Not to say I hope they are wrong this time. And, while I know I should rush home and check the source, isn't there a line about the Dreamettes being from Chicago?

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Yes, the Dreams are from Chicago; The Supremes were from Detroit.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

perhaps Beyonce does have the singing and acting chops for Effie, I do not know. Clearly, she could gain weight for the part, as Effie is supposed to be overweight.

I am thrilled DREAMGIRLS is finally coming to the big screen.

*Severe pains in my stomach. Face contorting. Tears beginning to stream.*

WHAT THE HECK?! DO I HAVE TO DO A HUMAN SACRIFICE TO MAKE SURE SHE STAYS AWAY FROM THIS CLASSIC!?!? She is not the only talented and popular black female vocalist in America! Give someone else a chance!

Beyonce gain weight???? HA!!!
That would so ruin her image. She is no Renee...or even a proffesional actor at that, so I highly doubt she will gain anything.
And even if they put her in a fat suit - the voice is ALL wrong.

Margo, take it from a girl who reads way too much casting gossip for her own good- IMDB and WENN are completely unreliable sources. I wouldn't even count on them spelling Knowles' name correctly without a double-check with other sources.

AICN, similarly, isn't always reliable, but at least they usually acknowledge where they get their info from, so you can determine for yourself if you want to believe someone with a weird handle who says they're in the crew of a movie.

They, at first, broke the news too that Beyonce was in talks - however a Rep for the movie contacted "Quint" who set it straight - and the UPDATE in the article says it all.

Beyonce is NOT being considered for Effie.

That's the point. Effie is supposed to have voice that is too "gospel" and "fire-and-brimstone" for the pop market, which is preventing The Dreams from crossing over from the R&B market -- THAT'S why, at least, initially, she is replaced by Deena as lead singer -- not her "look."

Beyonce has a smooth pop voice and while she can belt a little bit (so could Sheryl Lee Ralph), it's still a Deena voice. Casting her as Effie would render the entire plot of Act I nonsensical.

Dinah Washington would have made a great Effie, as they had similiar personalities. Only difference, Dinah knew her potential and stardom, took advantage of it, thus making her a very difficult person to work with. I love me some Dinah!

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

While I am abhorred at the idea of Beyonce as Effie (egads! gak! ugh!) I am really excited about even the possibility of Jaime Foxx as Jimmy. That would be phenomenal.....and if Taye Diggs wants to play ANY part in this, I support that as well. I think he'd be a great Curtis. He's smooth enough to pull it off.

But Beyonce....please....I don't think we're ready for that jelly.
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Vocally, Tarralyn Ramsey is perfect to play Effie.

I said it in the other thread about this..and I will say it again...LOUD AND CLEAR...Beyonce should NOT be in this movie.

And now they want her as Effie?

I tell ya...shaking my damn head.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Middle American 1: Tarlyn who?

M. American 2: I think it's Ramsey.

M. American 1: I ain't never heard of her.

M. American 2: Me neither.

M. American 1: I wanna spend my money on someone I know.

M. American 2: I heard Beyonce's in the movie.

M. America 2: Beyonce???!! Ooh, What time does it start? Let's go!!

And that is how production works

Frenchie certainly DOES have the vocal chops for this role. A role she has already played twice professionally.
But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

I could give a rat's a** how Middle America works. When Diana Ross was in The Wiz, it flopped, so there is no guarantee that the movie would be a success with Beyonce in it. And I've yet to hear anyone tell me what movie Beyonce has carried with her name only, without a name male co-star in it. Everyone and their mother knows that if Beyonce were to play Effie, the film would be a wreck. The girl cannot act and she doesn't even have chemistry with her own band mates, much less whoever else they would cast in the movie if she were to play Deena instead.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

The point being made here is that the film doesn't work or make any sort of sense if Beyonce plays Effie. If Knowles plays Effie, why would they take away the lead from her and subsequently fire her? That's Act 1 for you. It wouldn't make sense. Let's try to trust Condon - "Kinsey" is an amazing film.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

It's funny that you think just because Beyonce would be in the film, she'd be the only one carrying it. Hello! There are two Major Male roles in the film, as well as Three major Female roles. Beyonce won't be headlining this movie...The Five leading actor's will. (And the Wiz film was just a bad idea/rewrite in the first place - How is Diana gonna play a teenager at 40???? At least Beyonce is the right age for that role)

Curtis - Norm Lewis
Jimmy - Jamie Foxx
C.C. - Taye Diggs

Oh no no no to Frenchie. I can't stand hearing that song sung by someone with a vibrato you can drive a truck through. Please, no.

I wish you could hear her sing this score - she does nothing of the sort.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

I give Frenchie credit for trying but her acting is pedestrian at best and her singing enamores no one, apart from the tone deaf. Belting, in contradistinction to "shouting" is an artform which Frenchie has not yet mastered. Furthermore, she seemed to have trouble sustaining the high notes the last 2 times I caught her in 'Rent', i.e. she's a hit-and-run belter not at all Effiesque. She will get her diva turn, but hopefully not in the role of "Effie" on screen.
