The only one of that list I would love to see play Lorell is Tichina - she is perfect for that role, not only with voice, but with attitude. The others are just considerations to the possibility. Girlfriend needs to work some more! (And she needs an album - but not a mainstream one where she sings some badly written hip-hop/r&b...but more of a soulful album with a bunch of slow jams)

"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I think Tichina's voice is too low for Lorell, but the chick can sing down. I saw her in "If These Hips Could Talk" and she did an excellent rendition of "I Can't Stand The Rain." I wonder what she's up to and why she isn't doing anything on stage?

I think she's taking time off for her child, cuz MC Lyte is busy working with that Pet Star thing. Someone has to stay home and care for the child.

What does MC Lyte have to do with that? I've heard rumors..but educate me?

Why do you think Lyte moved from Brooklyn to Cali?

I thought that was because she was trying to act. Isn't Tichina married to some music producer?

First of all Florence Ballard was very much on her way to comeback before she died. Secondl aint no way in hell anybody with good common sense cast Beyonce as Effie.

I couldn't find the original topic about "Dreamgirls" but I think some of you mentioned that Effie doesn't necessarily have to be overweight. If that's the case, then, I think Deborah Cox should be Effie. She has the voice for "And I'm Telling You" and "I Am Changing." And she can act.
With Deborah as Effie, I can see Beyonce as Deena. Countess Vaughan would be great as Lorell.

Deborah Cox has a great voice, but she doesn't really have the knock-you-out gospel sound or power. More of a smooth, pretty tone. She also has that glamourously beautiful look, even as Aida. I could see her as Deena though.

How you gon' have a chubby Lorell and an athletic Effie? Deb has got some guns on her.

I'm not going to take anything away from Knowles. Although she may not be right for Effie, she is extremely talented.

i hope whoever is cast as "Deena Jones" in this movie has the good sense not to play her as a "bitch" or an "uppity diva" because she isn't. it would be very easy for an untrained actress who has no concept of the original character/show to walk in there and think that "Deena" should be played like this. Hopefully Bill Condon will see to it that whoever does this role does it properly.

Exactly how should Deena be portrayed? I mean yes she was reluctant to take center stagebut she did and took
Effie's man. Even if Deena is not a bitch the public will see her as so because she took her bestfreind's boyfreind

in all of the productions i've seen of the show (and i've seen 2 of the best: the original production and the 1987 revival) the character of "deena jones" was not a bitch. sheryl lee ralph most definitely did not play her that way and neither did alisa gyse.

You are so right Marquise,Deena is not an uppity diva bitch.
The only time she shows signs of being like that is @ the end of act one when she is tired of putting up with Effie's ..."bitching & nagging & all of her screaming too"

YES PERFUSION, AND AT THAT POINT EVERYONE IS FED UP WITH EFFIE, SO SHE'S NOT ALONE.
I DON'T SEE DEENA'S CHARACTER AS A BITCH. SHE'S A YOUNG IMPRESIONABLE GIRL IN THE BEGINNING WHO DOES FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SLICK, CHARMING AND UNDERHANDED CURTIS TAYLOR, JR. (DESPITE THE FACT THAT CURTIS HAD BEEN SEEING EFFIE PRIOR) AND GETS CAUGHT UP IN THE WHIRLWIND OF SUCCESS...IN THE END SHE WINDS UP BEING VICTIMIZED AS WELL AND HAS TO BREAK FREE...BUT IN THE SHOW THERE IS NOT ONE SCENE WHERE DEENA IS BEING A BITCH TO ANYONE.

Yeah, whoever plays Deena definitly has to be careful because there are so many other images/concepts attached to that role..."Ms. Ross" and the whole idea of being a "Diva"
Deena can't be played as a diva bitch because the audience is not gonna go for the reconciliation of Deena and Effie. And Effie can't be too sympathetic because that can be a bit of an overkill as well. I think both Deena and Effie were caught up showbiz and they both made choices they regret.
The portion when Curtis and Deena become an item needs to be fleshed out more because I can see how some might interpret it as Deena stealing Effie's man.
