Deena may not be a Diva bitch, but by accepting Curtis's offer you can tell that A: it's getting to her head, and B: She's no longer a true friend.
No one is holding a gun to Deena's head, and telling her that she HAS to take the lead. She secretly wanted it.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Granted Deena may not have been the bitch, but she was the diva. Who ever plays Deena will have to be able to pull of the grand diva performance of the opening of the seecond act. Because at that point you can really tell that Deena is the centerr of the group. I always looked at the opening of act two as Deena's solo.

Yes ,the actress playing Deena in the movie will have to be a "DIVA" not a "DIVA BITCH".When they chant Deena,Deena,Deena!!!!!! during "the opening of act 2" the audience has to believe it.However, the audience has to like the chacacter too.Yeah she took her friend's man but she got caught up . Effie got caught up (in substance abuse & alcohol?).Lorell got caught up (with the married Jimmy).

Was Curtis ever really Effie's man,or did he have his eye on Deena when she ran into the Apollo late (he was lurking about). was he just manipulating them the entire time?
What does everyone think?

I agree with perfusion. Beyonce cannot play deena either because I can't see people rallying behind her with love. Maybe Aaliyah not beyonce.

Ron, I don't think perfusion said he didn't thing Beyoncé should play "Deena". What he wrote was that she shouldn't play her as a "diva bitch".
As far as Aaliyah goes, it's not possible...she would have been a great choice but sadly she's no longer with us. There are two singers I would love to see play "Deena" on screen. Beyoncé (and for all you naysayers she has the inside track on this role) or Ashanti, who I think can also pull it off.

Marquise, I was with you till you said Ashanti. Hopefully, she'll be in jail by the time of the movie.

I'm sorry to hear that truth cuz i really think Ashanti would do a good job in the role.

It's interesting thought because both Beyonce and Ashanti bring their own "baggage" that would have an effect on how they come across on screen.

That's why neither of them need to be in it. That's why it needs unknowns. People wouldn't be thinking about Effie, Deena, and Lorell, they'd be thinking about Beyonce as Deena. I think it would be hard for them to separate the status of the actress from the character.

After reading that summary into the insight of Deena, if anyone really thinks that Beyonce has the acting ability to pull that off, they must be smoking some real good ish. In real life, she comes across as a big phony...and that would come across on-screen. I don't care how much of a big name she is. It's about picking the right person for the part and she is NOT that person.

That depends Ghetto..I've been to many a movie that has brought people to their feet cheering...all I know is I'll be there munching on my popcorn, sipping my soda and happy as can be cuz they finally preserved the show on the screen. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that they do it justice. Theatre and Film, as everyone knows are two very different mediums.
There are many examples of many Broadway shows that were succesfully transferred, some may even say improved once they reached the big screen. There are also examples of some shows that didn't translate well to film.
I strongly believe that "Dreamgirls" is one of those movies that lends itself very easily to the film medium and under capbale hands will be one of those shows that can be succesfully adapted.
I'm keeping on the positive note on this one regardless of whoever plays what role because I've waited 20+ years to see this show finally be filmed. David Geffen is very protective of this piece, he has alot invested in it he's not going to sit back and see it be turned into a mediocre effort.
With that said I am off this thread, the topic is gearing into a direction I really don't feel I have to tolerate. I'm up for an intelligent, stimulating discussion on the subject and this thread is providing neither for me.
If anyone wants to get into a more mature discusiion on this film's possibilities feel free to PM me.
If all you want to do is create drama and start cat fights, please don't waste my time.

I hate to admit but I agree with Marquise because I too think that Ashanti would be a good choice. She really has that soft sound and Ashanti is a beautful women, but I dont think she could pull of the dance moves. I really want them to make a good choice for Deena because she is my favorite of the entire musical. I cant't shake the felling that Kelly Rowland would make an excellent choice. Her look is so reminscent of young Diana/ Sheryl. I can just envision her descinding down that staircase for the opening of Act two and get chills.

Silent, you seem to have some personal hate for Beyonce, which kinda makes me doubt your opinion of her. What makes you think that she comes across as a big phony on tv? Her acting ability really has yet to be seen. Plus, it's not like most of her work in the movie will be just acting. She'll be doing a lot of singing, dancing, performing and nobody out there right now can touch her on that tip. The stage version of Dreamgirls took virtually untrained actors (who could sing great) and got them to give great performances. I don't see why the movie couldn't work the same way as long as the actor is willing to put in the work. I think Beyonce has proven that she has the work ethic needed turn out a great performance, especially under the guidance of Condon, Geffen, and the others involved.

How does one appear in 3 different acting projects with acting skills yet to be seen? That basically means they have none.
I don't have any personal hate towards Miss Knowles. I just don't subscribe to everyone's theory that she is the next best thing since sliced bread.
And with some of your remarks about other singers, you really shouldn't call my opinion suspect.

I personally think there should be all unknowns. It will make the movie more realistic. I mean, if Beyonce gets the role people will not see "Deena" they will see "Beyonce as Deena." Does that make sense? But if we have to put someone famous in one of these roles, I stick by ANGIE STONE as Effie.

I dont think it will work with three unknown Dreams and Jamie Foxx or other stars playing the male roles. It will throw the balance off because people are going to be drawn to the stars. So, if they are going to have a star on the male side they need atleast one star on the female side.
Silent, What I mean is that she hasn't done a movie that IMO has shown what she can do as an actress. Austin Powers, she was box office window dressing. The prime example in proving my point is Beyonce in The Fighting Temptations, she wasn't great and her co-star, Cuba Gooding Jr. (Oscar Winner) was equally horrible. Cuba can do his thing in dramatic roles but he can't do comedy. Pink Panther, she plays an international pop star. Almost all of the work she's done has been comedy. Maybe she can do well with a more dramatic part. I'm not saying she's the best actress of the best for Deena. She should have a shot like everybody else. I'm sure Condon will go with the best overall choice.

Truth - Okay, I see your point. And I hope Bill does go with the best choice overall. If anyone is a newcomer in the movie, it will probably be the actress that plays Effie.

I don't think that Beyonce should play Deena, because of the MTV musical Carmen, she just wasn't working in the dramatic/musical part. Not only that but the fact that she has her own group drama with Destiny's Child I dont want the public writing this movie off as another Beyonce spectacle and also she is too big a star to play Deena. Everybody willl think they are watching the Beyonce autobiography.
I've heard through the grapevine that Tamyra Gray is up for the role against Beyonce and I hope she gets it. She's a better actress and her voice fits the part better, and she's not as overexposed as Beyonce so audiences will actually be able to see her as Deena and not as Tamyra. And she's starred on Broadway and we need at least one broadway star in the show.
I think Jill Scott or Angie Stone should be Effie. AND YES EFFIE HAS TO BE OVERWEIGHT!!!!! I will be ed if they throw some skinny bitch in the role.
As for Lorell, throw in Heather Headley or Anika Noni Rose to make us broadway fans really happy.

I have two choices that people have never mentioned for the roles of Deena. The first is Tatyana Ali ,the girl is goregious and she can has a pleasent voice. The second is Brandy, we all know that she's a great singer and actress.

There's a reason no one has mentioned them in that context before, lol. Firstly, Tatyana's reed-thin voice wouldn't survive the 1st cut and secondly, it's hard to imagine Brandy in the role of Deena with one eye in Brooklyn and the other in Queens. Brandy just doesn't ooze sensuality or bring other-world beauty to the part in wake of the great Sheryl Lee Ralph as Deena. There has been some prior discussion about skin tones. SLR has roughly the same complexion as JH, but she fit the bill for the "right look" in relation to her Dreamette sorors. The actress stepping into the role of Effie Melody White is not the only one with big shoes to fill. IMO the three actresses comprising the Dreamettes are a package deal.
Condon has to cast brilliantly or this has the potential to go straight to the discount DVD bin. I know this next bit will be difficult for some on here to consume. The original Broadway staging & tour(s) were not seen by everyone on this planet and a lot of time has passed since their outing. Memory fades quickly and young audiences today have a plethora of forms of entertainment to fancy, so 'Dreamgirls--the Movie' will face stiff competition at the box office to capture their video-length attention spans and pocketbooks. I have a sneaking suspicion that it will be a STARFEST if it will be widely distributed feature film.
Finally, the reason Beyonce figures so prominently these days in any and every casting decision is because too many of her contemporary hip-hoplettes have been getting "jiggy" and trying to pass for "thugettes" (both onstage & off) over the past decade. Whenever an opportunity like this film comes alone, they are not even considered because they are perceived to be of a certain "ilk" that will never be featured in a Dreamworks or old school studio production.
