In case this hasn't been posted on this really long thread yet, here's this bit from the "Stage to Screen" column in Playbill.com:
*****
Finally, Tim responds to the rumor that Bill Condon hopes to cast Beyonce Knowles (as Effie, no less) and odds-on Oscar favorite Jamie Foxx in the “Dreamgirls” movie:
“Seeing as how Beyonce is wrong for this role not only physically but also voice-wise, I can think of only two possible explanations for this. Her camp released this news item themselves in the hopes that the producers would consider her. Or, more likely, whoever first picked up on this bit of gossip is not familiar with the musical and Ms. Knowles is actually being considered for the role of Deena (one for which she is better suited). I do hope the part about Jamie Foxx is true, however, as he would make a great C.C.

Justice,
I'm so glad you offered Coko of SWV for consideration since I a huge fan of hers. However, I'm certain that she's a longer of the long shots for the same reason that some here have disqualified the Divine Deborah Cox. She's a little long in the tooth now for the part. Good suggestion though IMO.

Jav, Maybe you're right - But I would love to hear her sing "And I'm Telling You"...or even "I am Changing". Her range is unbelievable. When she belts those high notes she makes it sound so effortless.
Cool that you like her. I'm so afraid she will be easily forgotten, since most black kids today have no clue who she is.

"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive.
"Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot."
"No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one."
Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

Justice,
I'm not shilling for Deb, but you have got to check a thread we ran to China and back about ALL THINGS WRONG WITH R&B TODAY at Deb's website. The link is http://www.deborahcox.com/message/thread.cfm?Message_ID=43539&Page=1
You are no doubt aware that the topic of "who's blowin' up in hip-hop" is as contentious as "stunt casting" over here. It seems to me that many older singers have forgotten and many younger audience members never learned that "show business" entails a range of art forms, media, and venues.

dreamboy, Brandy is a good actress but her voice is all wrong for Deena. They were going for a smooth/light sound. She has a more raspy tone. She's not glam or that pretty.
And Coko can sing great but her voice would be better for Lorrell, and she's too old and her body type is all wrong for Deena.
I think that the reason everyone is talking about Beyonce is because most of the other R&B singers out there right now are copying her style (Ashanti, Christina Milian,Brandy) So, I think if you're going to look to a current female R&B star, you might as well go to the best. I'll give it to Tamyra though, she is not a Beyonce clone and she's an OK actress from what I've seen so far. I know one thing, I CAN'T wait until they officially cast this thing...Especially after all the speculatin/arguin we've been doing over this.

Kate Bosworth has beaten Beyoncé Knowles to land the part of Lois Lane in the new 'Superman' movie.
The stunning actress, who is romancing 'Lord of the Rings' star Orlando Bloom, won the coveted role to play the Man of Steel's love interest in new film 'Superman Returns'.
She will join newcomer Brandon Routh, who will play Superman, in the movie, which is believed to feature the action hero returning to Earth to do battle with evil.
Kevin Spacey, who starred with Kate, 21, in 'Beyond The Sea', is set to take the role of Superman's arch enemy Lex Luthor.
Kate's boyfriend Orlando is said to be thrilled his lover has won the as he is a huge fan.

What about Mya in the role of Deena. She's pretty, has a very sensual voice, and she did have a cameo in Chigaco. I think that she should be up for consideration. Infact I'd like to see her in the role instead of Beyonce.

Beyonce will be performing w/ Josh Groban at the Oscars. I think homegirl is making moves to catch the Academy's attention before Dreamgirls.
I posted this in off topic, but I think it relevant to this debate.

Does anyone know of Sharon Wilkins? I saw her in the rehearsal footage for All Shook Up on Broadway.com. She might make a good Effie if she can belt and act well.
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

Thanks for the info, Ghetto. She does seem very Effiesque.
