DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Are they crazy? Are they on crack? Are they purposely trying to destroy the film? (And by the way, yes, I know there's another thread, but the PAGES of insipid American Idol wannabee speculation made me think we needed a fresh start).

As of this moment, it's just a rumor (apparently put out there just to piss me off), but, for what it's worth, here's the item from IMDB.com:

"Knowles Set for 'Dreamgirls' Role?
Pop star Beyonce Knowles is being given the chance to expand her acting resume, and star in a new movie version of Broadway musical Dreamgirls. After cutting her acting teeth in Austin Powers sequel Goldmember and the upcoming Pink Panther remake, producers are convinced Knowles has what it takes to make a full-time film career - and want her to headline the movie, about a singing trio from Chicago, loosely based on real life stars The Supremes. Beyonce is being tipped to play frontwoman Effie, the role made famous on Broadway by actress Jennifer Holliday. Chicago screenwriter/director Bill Condon is currently heading up the project and is rumored to want Ray star Jamie Foxx to take a role. Filming is expected to start as early as this summer."

They are nuts, if this comes to fruition.

Beyonce should be Deena!

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

I don't know, but it seems unlikely.

Condon was quoted in a recent article as saying he wanted an unknown for Effie, but was looking for a "name" for Deena. (Which makes perfect sense.)

If one had to cast Beyonce in the film, of course, she should be Lorrell. But certainly Deena over Effie, and Condon is no dummy, he must realize this. While the studio may be clamoring for a "name" for commercial purposes, that "name" recognition factor works no matter what role they are cast in, especially to an American public unfamiliar with the piece.

Bouncy?? I never even saw her 'superstar' quality as a pop star! Jennifer Holliday really isn't that old to not even be considered! Even Harvey Fierstein over big Bouncy!!

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

The same thing happened over a decade ago with Dreamgirls when Whitney Houston was at the height of her popularity and was approached to play Deena. She countered that she loved the show, but wanted to play Effie or have Deena's role rewritten so that she could sing "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going"???????? The producers at the time passed and thankfully that never happened (though Whitney back then would have been a great Deena, as originally written). We'll see whether Condon caves in to Beyonce's "people" and destroys the film.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

You're right, Margo, but I think there's a difference.

At the time Whitney made all her demands, she was the only African-American female star who had that kind of clout, and the only choice the studios had as far as a "name" for any of the roles. So the ball was in her court.

Beyonce is different. (A) she's not that big of a star, certainly not what Whitney was 15 years ago, and (B) there is a much larger pool of successful African-American singers with "name" recognition to choose from, so Beyonce doesn't have nearly the kind of leverage that Whitney had.

I don't think Condon has to cave for the studio, in this case.

On the plus side, Foxx would be excellent as Curtis or Jimmy (given his current "hotter than hot" status in Hollywood, Curtis is much more likely).

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

I think it's all for the best that DREAMGIRLS wasn't filmed 15 years ago, and is being shot today.

While I agree with Margo that Whitney would have been a terrific Deena, today the casting possibilities are tantalizing. Who would they have cast as the men in 1986? MC Hammer? Michael Jackson????

Today, they can choose between Foxx, Wil Smith, or Taye Diggs, if they need a Hollywood "name" in one of the male roles, and yet still have many rather famous "American Idol" contestants to fall back on. Or even better, hire a great Broadway performer like Norm Lewis to do it.

The time is certainly ripe for DREAMGIRLS, the movie.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Yeah as I heard about the project I was thinking who could be in the movie. And I thought about her, but I don't think that she fits in the role of Effi. Is she vocally strong enough????

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

I don't trust IMDB "news," as it comes mostly from tabloids. I do trust Bill Condon not to screw this up. Gods and Monsters! Kinsey! We can expect Dreamgirls to be made with a great deal of care and respect. At least I hope so!

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

On the other hand, in 1986, Jennifer Holliday would have been the ONLY choice for Effie, being only 26 years old and still a fairly prominent "name" in R&B circles (remember her recording of "And I Am Telling You..." won her the Grammy for R&B Female in '82 and stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for four weeks and even hit #22 on the Pop charts -- she even collected a second Grammy that year for her performance of "Come Sunday"). Had Whitney been able to be convinced to come on board (a big IF certainly), Holliday and perhaps some other members of the original cast probably would have been asked to repeat their original roles.

If other prominent African American stars were to be included (this was pre-Hammer), they might have included the likes of Larry Fishburne, Danny Glover, Gregory Hines, Lonette McKee, Carl Anderson, not to mention the trio of Tisha Campbell, Tichna Arnold and Michelle Weeks who would have been fresh off of being the girl group in Little Shop of Horrors.

Also, the stars of the '80s, pre-hip-hop world of R&B were much closer in style to the Dreams of the 60s and 70s than Beyonce, Usher and the rest of today's singers (let alone the novices of American Idol) -- I could easily imagine Aretha, Labelle, Chaka, Luther Vandross, Alexander O'Neal, Stephanie Mills, Melba Moore, Donna Summer, George Benson, Gladys Knight, The O'Jay's, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and all manner of other Motown stars of the 60s and 70s who were still producing top 40 hits in the 80s, being able to seemlessly make cameo appearances in the movie of "Dreamgirls" in the Apollo sequences and in other backstage (and even on stage) scenes in the film had it happened in the mid-80s -- unfortunately they're all too old (or dead) now.

The film SHOULD have been done in the 80s. Unfortunately, that didn't happen, and we'll have to do the best we can with the post-hip-hop R&B/gospel talent of today, which is VERY different sylistically from Supremes/Dreams-style pop of nearly 40 years ago.

Ah, great research, Margo (as always -- don't you ever sleep??)

I was unconvinced until your last paragraph, and then it became crushingly clear to me. You are absolutely correct. Today's "names" will massacre that score with their overwrought, American Idol-induced malisma, which isn't remotely the Motown sound that DREAMGIRLS necessitates.

Ack. I try to hope for the best, and reality always comes crushing down. Oh well. Off to bed for me.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

We've waited all these years for the film, only to have it ruined with Beyonce??????? Geez... if they are going to go that route, why not cast Diana Ross as one of the Dreams?

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Beyonce will not be Effie for these reasons.
A: She does not a have a low enough register to pull it off. Despite the fact that she belts almost everything, the girl is a Soprano. Sure, she could do a Pop rendition of And I Am Tellin' You, and it could be a hit, but that voice would not work as the character of Effie.
B: She's too pretty. Curtis would have to leave her for someone prettier, who could sell records by looks. (Kelly Rowland (by looks) as Effie - sure. Going on looks alone, they would have to change the whole story line.
They have so many stars to choose from. I trust that they will make the right choices. You can't take an expensive and elaborate show like this, and ruin it for the film.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

I love that this Australian movie zine is reporting it as fact. And "Oscar nominee" Jamie Foxx? Nominations have not been announced yet!

Beyonce and Foxx are Dreamgirls

Singer turned actress Beyonce Knowles has signed to star in "Dreamgirls", a feature based on the Broadway musical of the same name.

A spell back, when Cinemas Online asked Knowles about the rumours that she had been linked to the film, she replied : "No, they haven't asked me, but I wanted to put the film together and pick the producers. I thought it was such a great play and it'd be fun to do that".

Now, shes apparently signed and will play the lead role.

Knowles is set to play Effie in the movie, loosely based on the life of all-girl group 'The Supremes', the role made famous on Broadway by actress Jennifer Holliday.

Oscar Nominee Jamie Foxx is also being courted for a role.

Guess we know who'll be providing the tunes for the soundtrack then?

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

All my fears seem to be coming to pass. Margo is absolutely right- any female "star" who gets attached is going to want to sing "And I Am Telling you" one way or another.

It's an incredibly hard movie to cast- not because of the range or difficulty of the roles, but because of the egos of performers involved. Any studio involved will insist on two things: Effie will be "prettier" than on Broadway and there will be (one way or another) a hit single recording on the soundtrack.

Well, at least no one has floated the idea (yet) of rewriting the script so that Usher can sing "And I Am Telling You..."

Margo - I can guarandamntee you that Whitney would not have agreed to be in the film with Jennifer playing Effie.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Ya know...if Foxx were smart, he'd take Jimmy. It's the showboat role...Oscar No. 2 written all over it. Again, if Beyonce were smart, she'd ask (pray...BEG) for Deena. If they had smart management (and were smart themselves) they would concern themselves with showing themselves off in the best light, instead of taking something because it's the 'lead'.

As for Curtis, I would kill to see Jesse Martin do it. But that, my friends, is a pipe dream.

re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

Beyonce's voice is WAY too twittery to play Effie. We need grassroots, bottom-of-the-toes earth momma belting for Effie. She should be Deena, yes. They're going to end up having to ratchet up the key of And I am Telling you for her.

Just like they're lowering the score of Pajama Game for Harry Connick, but that's another thread.... re: DREAMGIRLS casting news? Beyonce as Effie??????

No casting is set yet.

Hahaha, no, PLEASE kvetch! I am just stating (for those who take rumor as fact) that Moviehole and IMDB couldn't possibly be correct, because casting is most certainly not set.
